Need Computer Help
self

Posted on 10/09/2016 7:01:12 PM PDT by hsmomx3

My computer has been running fine until now, malwarebytes runs each day as does Windows Defender. I turned my computer off today and came home, turned it on and I get a message that says: The stub received bad data...so far this is when I try to get into malwarebytes program and windows defender. NOt sure about other programs. All of my updates seem to have disappeared.

What is a program I can use online to check for a virus?

I am not computer savvy when it comes to computer problems.

Thanks.

Running Windows 10.

Get this

http://www.avg.com/us-en/rescue-cd-business-edition?ECID=af:cj#tba2

(from a working computer, like your library's) downloaded onto a flash drive, and create a CD disk, or install it on the flash drive. Here is one version of instructions for it:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/avg-rescue-cd-90.htm

It starts itself from the CD or DVD drive, or from the bootable flash drive you created. It can't hurt anything. I've used it many times on repairing PCs.

And it's FRee.

I am running Win 10 also. Norton Security is not free, but it is worth every penny. Have been using it for years, still do.

I highly recommend it. You don’t have to do any strange setup, it does what it has to do, protect your computer against malware of all kinds.

It’s three years old and I have had no problems whatsoever since installing WIN 10 over a year ago.

I bought a CD of Ubuntu. Now, if Windows refuses to load or hangs up, I can pop the CD in, set the BIOS to boot from it,
and be able to run on Linux until I can fix the W10.

If you get a screen message to call a company that fixes ‘frozen’ computers, don’t call them.
If you feel you must call them, and the phone guy sounds like Dehli clerk, hang up.
Series.

I am running Win 10 also. Norton Security

I also am running win 10 with Norton on a 2+ year old Toshiba laptop and have had no problems. Comcast provides Norton free with their cable internet.

Is this the type of program that does it for you because I am illiterate when it comes to computer instructions.

I have Win7, but I’ve been using Norton Anti-Virus for years and years. I never have malware or viruses, or even Trojan viruses. They stop it all.

It’s not that expensive. I think I paid $49/yr this year; but for several years it was $39, but this year they added in a more specialized program that does a lot more.

I run the program every morning right after I turn my computer on. And, with the new software, they even let you know if you are clicking on a questionable link .. so you can decide if you really want to do that or not.

You can pay a lot more, but I’m very happy with Norton.

I will tell you this. I run a very expensive piece of equipment that has Windows as its operating system. 700,000 dollar piece to be exact. Its a whole tree processor.

One night I had the computer crash twice on me-WHILE I WAS CUTTING DOWN A TREE! Now you all might think that is funny but, the thing quit halfway through the tree’s’ and they were big...most likely about 10 tons each.

So after the second time, I called Waratah and told them what it did. They laughed and said its a minor problem and to ignore it. The next day, my boss was running it and it did the same thing. Only that time the tree snapped off and went over the cab causing over 6 grand in damages. Waratah had downloaded a bug into the system when they engineered the program and couldnt figure out why it was doing that. So, to fix the problem, they simply came out and installed a NEW computer. No problems with that since is solved the problem, I was there when they did it and asked them why in the hell they were using Windows for the system. They couldnt answer. I told them to build their own system instead of being so dam cheap and using a failed operating system to run their machines.

Your problem may be Windows 10. You might want to downgrade.

Arghhh....I downloaded and then got a message saying it was blocked!

I found all of my windows updates. I did search in the control panel.

Doesn’t solve the initial problem.

Right now, I am thankful to be able to get online as so much of what I do depend on the internet.

I have run several versions of Ubuntu, both 32-bit and 64-bit. I was on the Win10 "Insider Preview" program from December 2014 until July 2015. By the arrival of the final relese date, I decided that not only did I hate the implementation, but I also hated the marketing scheme, so I totally removed W10 from all my machines. I was running Ubuntu 15 Studio 64-bit on one machine, and was so impressed with it and earlier versions (they just kept getting easier and easier to use and update) that I swore never to go beyond Win 7 Pro or Ultimate. When they finally go down, I'll be done with M$ as a private residential installation.

BTW, I've been building, repairing, and upgrading PCs for over 20 years, and an individual user in the corporate community ten years before that. I think it was 1982 that I bought my own personal Osborne 1 portable computer.
