A federal appeals court on Friday reinstated a $120 million jury award for Apple Inc (AAPL.O) against Samsung (005930.KS), marking the latest twist in the fierce patent war between the world's top smartphone manufacturers.

The court said that there was substantial evidence for the jury verdict related to Samsung's infringement of Apple patents on its slide-to-unlock and autocorrect features, as well as quick links, which automatically turn information like addresses and phone numbers into links.

Friday's decision was made by the full slate of judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. In an 8-3 ruling, the judges said that a previous panel of the same court should not have overturned the verdict last February.

The three-judge panel did not follow U.S. Supreme Court limits on the scope of its review, because it examined evidence outside the record of the case, the decision said.

Representatives for Samsung and Apple could not immediately be reached for comment.

What they’ll let people patent these days is totally insane.

Is that why iOS 10 no longer has slide-to-unlock ?

I’m having a hard time getting used to the new method. Not the end of the world, just a minor annoyance. Temporary.

But still, I found myself wondering, “why change this, it worked fine.” I figured it was just the usual sort of arbitrary meaningless changes that the big technology leaders like to challenge their customer base with from time to time.

MS is much worse in this respect, I hasten to say.

I’m thinking of patenting electricity. The licensing will be YUGE! (But I’ll need it to pay for the licensing I’ll have to pay to the guy who patents air)

you know what’s funny.

I was an early adopter of the iphone and ipad, but the minute I heard about Apple’s original suit against Samsung... I KNEW Samsung must have an amazing product.

And sure enough, after checking on it, I switched over to Samsung and never looked back. Now my family ownes 6 samsung tablets and 2 samsung galaxy phones and no apple products.

Thanks Apple for bringing my attention to Samsung.

No, Apple wanted to use that directional slide to add functionality to the lock screen. Using it for just one thing was a waste of the slide function while the home button was essentially being unused.

Android phones like Nexus are probably much worse. Didn't they move the fingerprint unlock to the back side of the phone where you can't see it?

You know what's funny? Samsung copies an Apple feature, and then you think it's amazing! But not when Apple had it in the first place. Funny how folks knocked the iPhone when it came out, then others copied it to the extent that all smart phones now look like the iPhone. People are real funny in that respect.

The dissenting Justice's minority report objections to the two overturning Justices majority decision was fascinating reading as he took the two to task for their mis-application of the law, using non-facts not in evidence, hear-say, and ignoring the laws as written to give the Samsung attorneys what they wanted. He was literally aghast at the sheer lack of legal logic in their decision!

The two had been appointed by Obama, if I recall correctly. The dissenter was a George W. Bush appointee.

Good to see some one supporting Google in its bid to flood the world with ads ... not to mention implementing a worldwide speech-limited internet with Facebook.

Samsung already sent them the money; it’s in a Hanjin container somewhere in the Pacific.
