In an interview with New York Magazine published on Monday, President Obama vented his thoughts on the 2016 presidential election, noting some similarities between his election in 2008 and the current political climate, wondering when the "fever will break" - and even mentioning his former 2008 opponent by name.

No, not John McCain. The president said there's a "straight line" between Sarah Palin's selection as the GOP vice presidential nominee in 2008 and Donald Trump's insurgent presidential campaign:

"I see a straight line from the announcement of Sarah Palin as the vice-presidential nominee to what we see today in Donald Trump, the emergence of the Freedom Caucus, the tea party, and the shift in the center of gravity for the Republican Party."
