Anti-war activist, author and podcast host Cindy Sheehan is probably best known for pitching a tent near then-President George W. Bush’s summer house in Texas in 2005 as she continued to request meetings with Bush about the death of her son during the Iraq War.
Her son, U.S. Army Specialist Casey Sheehan, was killed by enemy action near Baghdad in April 2004.
Cindy Sheehan, who lives in Vacaville, Calif., was honored Saturday night with the 2016 Eugene V. Debs Award during a ceremony inside the Sycamore Banquet Center on the Indiana State University campus.
For those not familiar with Debs, he was a member of the Indiana senate as a Democrat from 1885 to 1889. Years later, he ran as a Socialist candidate for president of the United States five times (1900, 1904, 1908, 1912 and 1920), the latter from a prison cell. He also was a candidate for the U.S. Congress from Indiana in 1916. (snip)
“Eugene V. Debs made a heroic speech in Canton, Ohio, [in 1918] before the U.S. entered World War I, and he felt so strongly about it that he knew he was breaking an unjust law and he was sent to prison for 10 years. I thought that that was such a mark of heroism, that he cared so much about humanity that he was willing to stand up against the U.S. empire.”
Then, Sheehan said, she went from “being this little Democrat to knowing Socialism is the answer.”
