433K people die every year because they sat for too long

You might want to sit down for this. On second thought, keep standing. A study published last month in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that sitting for more than three hours per day is responsible for 3.8%—or approximately 433,000—of all deaths worldwide every year.

At this point, it's old news that sitting for long periods of time is bad for your health. But who knew it could be this deadly? According to a press release, researchers looked at data collected from 54 countries between 2002 and 2011.

They found that more than 60% of the world's population sits for more than three hours per day, with the average being approximately 4.7 hours. The highest amount of sitting-related deaths were in the Western Pacific and parts of Europe, AFP reports.

“433K people die every year because they sat for too long”...

Right, well, for some mad reason bosses tend to get decidedly annoyed if you try to spend most of your time lying down instead of working like they hired you to do.

Some very unkind comments towards the not-sitting-individual tend to be uttered then. Quite befuddling, no?

Half of American deaths each year are from taking bad medical advice from the media.

This stuff has taken hold in the workplace. We all have standing desks. I guess I’m dumb, because I can’t do more than read my email while standing up. I certainly can’t do substantive work. I’ve tried.

I read that getting up and walking for a couple of minutes is as good as standing, so when I need a break, I walk around other floors in my building. Then I come back and sit...

Maybe they will stop with the self-driving cars and work on making standing cars next.

Realizing that you probably helped pay for this study will take an average of 11.4 days off of your lifespan.
