Designated Survivor - a new series based on the concept of a Cabinet member becoming President. Kiefer Sutherland is outstanding as new President Tim Kirland after the Capitol and top-level US leadership is wiped out in a bomb blast.
I remember seeing the movie version of “The Man” back in the 1970’s.
The plot of the movie was a bit different. The President and the Speaker of the House were killed when a building collapsed on them while visiting Germany.
The Vide President was a man who was in a wheel chair and very sick, and he refused to take the oath of office. “We just had the funeral of one president; we don’t need the funeral of another.”
Next in line....the President Pro-tem of the Senate, a black guy (played, I think, by James Earl Jones).
Burgess Meredith was in the movie, and he said he wouldn’t be surprised if a bunch of southern states seceded.
Watching now. Recorded. Looks good.

Good until the HUD Sec, who was kept away from the building because he is the Designated Survivor, actually asks what is a designated survivor. That was just stupid.

I surprisingly like the show. I was not enamored with “This is Us”. Figures that everyone loves a show when I don’t. Lol. Speechless was shockingly decent. So far those are the 3 I have watched. I will get through them all eventually. “Bull” is next on the DVR list I’ll watch.
Given that the whole point of the VP is to be the spare tire, they should really not go to any SOTU or other Presidential speech to Congress. And there’s no real reason for any Cabinet members to attend. Or the Supreme Court, or any Generals, or anybody but the President and Congress, minimize the damage in case anything happens.
Orrin Hatch (Pres Pro Tem) stayed behind in Obama’s 2016 SOTU. So he an not some Obama d-bag Secretary of dog doo would have taken over. I’m glad, though I don’t think it’s proper that the Speaker or President Pro Tem be in the line of succession. After VP it would technically be the Acting President, though it would be interesting to see if the Tyler precedent would followed. If the acting President can’t be displaced until the next term starts then there is no distinction.
The dead President in this show was certainly a democrat (too boring to be Biden, more like Tim Kaine but older), talking about the 1% and it sounds like Kiefer’s character was working on lib housing BS. In addition Virginia Madsen was cast as someone described as a “conservative Congresswoman” who is definitely in the “rival party”. Her character’s name is Kimble Hookstraten, gotta be Michigan. If she’s the only Rep. alive can she just declare herself Speaker, or do you need a quorum?
Anyway, was I the only one who watched that was yelling at Kiefer to take off that damn Cornell hoodie? You can’t get sworn in wearing that!!!!
I saw it and it was good—lets see how it progresses in the next episodes.
I think the attack is going to turn out to be the work of right wing extremists or maybe the military itself. I can feel the hints being sprinkled in the very first episode.

Sounds like a play on the late Playboy Playmate and actress Dorothy Stratten (whose real last name was Hoogstraten). Other than that, I've seen countless ads for the show, but wasn't planning on watching it. I figured his Cabinet position was low man on the totem poll, like Education. HUD Sec is about as nothingburger a post as you can get, mostly filled with political flunkies of no particular talent and shouldn't even be a department (nor should Education). A Zero appointee learning he'd been elevated to President, would've ran into the nearest closet, gotten into the fetal position and started sucking on his thumb.
Obama’s former boytoy Kal Penn is in this, plays a speechwriter.
Funny scene with him and Kiefer using the old “I don’t know that the person I’m talking about is the person I’m talking to” trope. He hears Kiefer puking in a bathroom stall and starts talking about how this clown HUD secretary “Kirkland” (his name is Kirkman) has no business being President.
Kirkman’s teenage son is a drug dealer. I’m gonna watch again next week, I just hope they don’t bash conservatism.
Kiefer’s mom’s dad was Tommy Douglas, first CCF (now NPD) Premier of a Canadian Province.
Complete aside but actor Julian McMahon’s dad was PM of Australia.
