Tim Cook says augmented reality will be bigger than virtual reality

ook has been dropping hints about Apple's interest in augmented and virtual reality since the beginning of the year. In January, the Financial Times reported that Apple has a secret team numbering in the hundreds of employees working to develop applications of the two technologies, including headsets.

In his comments to GMA, Cook doesn't entirely write off virtual reality, but he does make it sound like a lower priority for Apple. "Virtual reality sort of encloses and immerses the person into an experience that can be really cool but probably has a lower commercial interest over time," he said. "Less people will be interested in that, but there are some really cool areas there for education and gaming that we have a lot of interest in."

His point generally, with regard to VR, seems to be that its applications are limited since it's sort of antisocial to wrap a screen over your face, whereas AR headsets could be used day to day as you walk around and interact with others in person.

There doesn't seem to be any clear timeline for when Apple's AR and VR projects might publicly materialize — if that should end up happening at all. But talking up product categories before entering them some years down the road is kind of Apple's style, so though it could be a while, it certainly sounds like Apple has something in the works

I wonder if one of his themes for an augmented reality scene is naked teenage men running around for him to chase.

So what is AR? A HUD? Google glasses by another name?
I look forward to trying VR someday. AR not so much.

AR is like MS Hololens. Think VR, but with stuff projected onto the world around you, instead of using a closed headset like Oculus Rift.

Truthfully VR is more strong in the entertainment department. AR is more useful in real world applications

Near I can tell, it’s like a personal headsup display that tells you what you’re looking at.

Hopefully one of our FReeper tech guys will chime in.

I think you may be more likely to see Augmented Reality in conjunction with a heads up display with Apple CarPlay, where linked with GPS, the Turn-by-Turn directions would appear on the windshield, along with information on businesses and attractions coming up ahead, such as the type of services available, food types available, relative costs, ratings, etc. in a graphic mode, but not too distracting. It could become much more effective with a self-driving car. Where a passenger could ask for information on what restaurants are coming up ahead in the next block, etc.

Let's hope it wouldn't be used for spotting and running over Pokeman Go characters! Some drivers might not be able to tell the difference between a character and a pedestrian or bicyclist. Oops. Sorry about that.

I’ve seen this movie. Think it had Bruce Willis in it.

I tend to agree. About a month ago we were in the lobby of my building and a woman I worked with showed me the pokemon go character on our marble floor, via her smart phone camera. Then she pressed a button and zapped it.

I knew right then where gaming is going. This will bi a bigger leap from current gaming than current gaming is from pong. It’s a completely new gaming paradigm.

Reality coupled with CG, in 3D. This could be amazing.

“VR, seems to be that its applications are limited since it’s sort of antisocial to wrap a screen over your face”

Unless VR can become a glasses-free, shared experience. And that technology has existed for years. It is just too expensive up until now to be practical.

But on the acquisition side, a 3D 360 at 40K (not 4K) resolution camera exists today. It is expensive but within the budget of film and other content producers.

AR is a much bigger revenue generator for the likes of Apple. There’s potential for collection of a wealth of information about personal habits, and for presentation of laser-targeted advertising. VR, not so much.
