Ping for your lists. Samsung’s quick fix for its exploding phones is a software update that limits charging to only 60% full charge.

Boy they’re in a lot of trouble that I couldn’t be bothered to fix but comment on because I don’t know what else to do.

Long time Freeper here.

I own the Note 7. Love the device, I plan on swapping it out when the replacements arrive. I will not switch to another phone, IMHO there is no other device out there that has the features i want.

I give props to Samsung & Tmobile my carrier for not dragging their feet on this. Sammy did not hesitate to issue a full recall. I wil use my phone until the replacement comes and then I will swap it out and press on.

The smartphone market is allot like the automotive market - you have your fan groups like FORD vs Chevy. And right now these fanboys are out in force having their jollies with Samsung's misfortune. Remember this very thing happened to Apple two years ago.

The Note 7 is my 10th Android phone and my 4th Samsung Note. I'm sticking around.

If you’re comfortable & satisfied with your phone, you’re right to stick with it. Enjoy you max 60% battery charge.

Send out a charging dongle to all owners that clamps the voltage to 3.9 or so...until they send a replacement.

You act like its a PERMANENT thing. Its until the replacements come.

GM just made a recall. I don’t see people running over each other to go to their nearest GM Dealership

Man, that is lame to the max. It's completely comprehensible, of course, from an electrical point of view. But in an industry where 20% longer "battery life" is a huge marketing advantage, losing 40% of battery life is beyond embarrassing.

I guess the problem must be that some charging circuit component that is supposed to figure out that the battery is completely charged, and stop charging it, doesn't do its job. Or dies. Or something.

Man, that type of charge control circuitry has been a standard, solved problem for many decades. Somebody at Samsung or their suppliers needs to lose their head over this.

I said the same thing yesterday. Someone in QA / Reliability testing did not do their job.

That’s not ho li-ion charging works. Limiting charge to 60%will not guarantee the separator defect will not trigger an explosion but it likely will annoy users enough to turn in their phones for replacements.

No. Its a rare manucacturing defect in the battery that allows anode and cathode to come in contact. Software or current limiting can’t fix that. See videos of crazy Russian guy stabbing li-ion battery with a knife for further info ;-)

Good lord. I'm .... speechless. And that's quite a feat.

60%? I’d take the phone back (and I like Samsung’s products). That’s not enough for it to perform as intended.

LiIon, LiPo etc are voltage limited cells.

They would be wise to inject a software controlled charge limiter in all future devices if they are going to use cheap cells.

Engineers today are either stupid or gamblers.

Maybe they should talk to Boeing about burning batteries.

They probably are the most knowledgeable on this problem, since the 787 battery issue!
