The baby and mother have arrived in Bahrain via helicopter with a medical escort and have been taken to a shore-based hospital for follow on care," Urban said in an email to The Virginian-Pilot.
"The family practitioner aboard Ike, who delivered the baby, is certified in child birth and has experience delivering babies. A number of personnel assigned to Ike medical department have received training to deliver and care for a newborn."
The Navy requires annual health examinations and for expectant mothers to self-report pregnancy within two weeks of confirmation from a medical care provider, according to Navy Personnel Command.
But Urban said the sailor's chain of command wasn't aware of the pregnancy. It wasn't immediately clear Monday whether the sailor herself knew she was pregnant.

Something about this story seems off. Not knowing about being pregnant is at the top of the list.
DUPLICATE article
7 pounds does not sound premature. Looks like the Navy’s physical fitness standards might be a tad lax to not notice. Air Force I could understand. I little disappointed in the Navy. Go Army!
Say WUUUUUUUTTTT???
“Something about this story seems off. Not knowing about being pregnant is at the top of the list.”
You’re not kidding. Women who don’t know they’re pregnant are usually pretty chunky, not the body type that would pass Navy PT standards.
>The baby and mother have arrived in Bahrain via helicopter with a medical escort and have been taken to a shore-based hospital for follow on care,
Now our Navy is in the business of child care and motherly duties. Brilliant.
The family practitioner aboard
means same as general practitioner in days of old.
Like the old term : flight surgeon
I've read stories about it happening. Usually, the girl is so obese that she doesn't notice the extra weight. If that is the case here, the Navy's physical fitness standards need to be looked at.
When I was in the Army every female Soldier had to take a pregnancy test prior to deployment.
My latest baby excretion was 6 lbs, 5 ozs.
Actually my wife excreted it but I take partial credit.
Removed to a shore hospital....well, that is a new way to avoid sea duty.
Now find Baby Daddy.
Disgusting. And now whatever unit she was in on the reduced staff ship will have to pick up the slack with her being gone.
Looks like the ship deployed about 3 months ago. So she would have been about 6 months along when they deployed.
They were probably already doing her work for her. They might not notice much change.
Just like the private sector. It was bad enough having my female staff get pregnant, and then one moron guy started taking Family Medical Leave when his wife gave birth.
Just one of the reasons why chucking it all in was way too easy for me.
No one should be surprised at this. What did they think was going to happen if healthy young men and women are put together in close quarters and the lights are turned off?
On board a -warship- the term “family practitioner” shouldn’t be used no matter what his medical school certificate says.
Everything aboard should remind them of what they are. Maybe the galley should start being the “restaurant”.
Our military is so F-ed up today. 8 years of Obama has done damage that nothing can repair except a complete military disaster happening to us.
