Bali's tourism at risk of being completely wiped out by Islamic law banning alcohol

The popular Indonesian resort of Bali may face a draconian alcohol ban that could carry a jail sentence of up to ten years for enjoying cold beers on the beach. A proposed bill to outlaw the production, sale, consumption and possession of alcohol has been tabled in the parliament, 700 miles away in the capital, Jakarta. If passed, it would decimate the tourism sector across the country, industry chiefs have warned. 'The tourists… drink alcohol all the time. It will be very inconvenient for them if they can't find alcohol,' said Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association head, Hariyadi Sukamdani.

Why would any normal Westerner civilian willingly travel to an Islamic-run area for "vacation" purposes? Or any purpose, really.

Bali is I think the only Hindu country in Indonesia.
When I was there in 2001 just before 911, it was clear there were Islamic radicals there trying to transform the country.
I’m sure it is worse now.

Lots of foreign resort ownership holding together the country.
If they pull out, Bali will collapse.

Bali is 90% Hindu and the people are really nice.
Northwest Bali is much more Islamic and a little scary.

The Hindi are kind, tolerant and wonderful people. I have known many and would welcome any of the Hindu I have met as both friends and neighbors. I am sure there are good and bad; I just have not met the bad.

However, I cannot say the same about the Muslim. They are certainly not tolerant.

This sounds a little like ... I dunno ... Disney World banning anyone under the age of 18? — not a sound business strategy.

The wahabi’s have been working on the peacefull Indonesians since I was working there in the 70’s Funded by Saudi they have radicalized Islam in Indonesia. Wahabism and the Gulf supporters are our number one enemies.

Because the level of hypocrisy with regard to alcohol and women is both stunning and highly entertaining.

North coast of AUS is the winner here.

I dont drink at all, but have they ever considered banning Islam? Im pretty sure Islam has now killed far more people than alcohol has... quite a feat in itself.

“Wahabism and the Gulf supporters are our number one enemies.”

Truer words have never been spoken.

In 2004, I read the book “Hatred’s Kingdom” by Dore Gold. It was about the Sauids and their really malignant brand of Wahhabi Islam.

This book really changed my thinking about the Saudis. I wish more people would read it.
