Surgeons protest CMS proposal requiring them to code every 10 minutes

Surgeons are speaking out against a Medicare proposal that would require them to use new billing codes to track their work in 10-minute increments during global surgical "packages" that span 10 days and 90 days, reports Medscape Medical News. The "packages" include preoperative and postoperative care as well as the procedure itself.

“The other vendors and I laughed at the government bureaucrats. They had no idea how impractical their ideas were.”

Yes, and they actually do think that the data they are forcing physicians to enter is going to contribute to the creation of some massive database that will be mined for wonderful advances in health care. This is a tragic joke. Tragic, because it takes away from the time that could/would be spent making a proper and accurate diagnosis and treatment plan - and what is entered is seldom very accurate.

I’m almost 40 with two small kids. I know a career change isn’t unheard of but I feel like it’s insurmountable at this point in my life. My husband is in the same spot as me, and as a physician, he has so much time and money tied up in his career that I don’t know how he would get out. We both just grin and bear it and try to get they each day but it’s honestly becoming increasingly more difficult.

Glad it’s not just me. And “impractical” is the polite word for their stupid bull$hit ideas.

I retired a year ago July after 34 years in healthcare revenue cycle and financial management analysis. Health issues forced my hand but my job would have been outsourced in a month. I was an expert in Big Data, but an algorithm and software is cheaper than paying a person.

Good Grief! Did you ever stay with a sick person in the hospital and watch the nurses station? They used to “nurse” ...now they are computer users. I watched over the shoulder of one, thinking I was going to see a video game or something ... nope. She was filling out a form on a visit she had just made to my Father in Law ... she wasn’t in the room 5 minutes (BP, etc) and it took her about 15 minutes to get the form filled out.

There was a study about a year ago that said docs use to spend 5% of their time on paper work, now it’s 35%!!!”

What’s worse is when MedStar Health records got hacked and held for ransom, newbie employee didn’t know how to use paper records!! Newbie docs didn’t know how to write out prescriptions.

Typical of government regs. FUBAR
