Several key navigation systems, including autopilot, were knocked out and the plane was unable to return to Sydney as low cloud and rain meant the flight crew couldn't see the runway....
According to the ATSB, the captain accidentally omitted a zero when he was entering the plane's longitude. This meant the navigation system thought the plane was near the South African city of Cape Town - 11,000 kilometres away.

Watered?
Actually it seems like the computer tried multiple times to tell them something was wrong. Three audible warnings, a visual message that in the the words of one of the crew happened so fast it wasn’t readable, and finally a “Terrain, Terrain” warning that they paid attention to because it startled them. Ho Lee Fook indeed. I do love the Air Asia corporate speak
about robust management systems in place to prevent this from happening again.
I just saw a program on “The Smithsonian” channel about China Air 006. The 747 fell from 41,000 feet to near sea level rolling and turning the whole way.
They eventually determined it was pilot error after losing one engine.
Interestingly the pilots did an incredible job of saving the plane as it literally had large parts of the wings and fuselage torn off. They had to lose altitude by adjusting speed and turn using other means than normal.
They ended up making an incredible landing.
The pilot had thousands of hours flying in 747s and they think he thought his instruments had gone out because the plane was doing things it couldn’t do. It turned out the instruments were correct.
In fairness, they had an episode that perfectly explains the quality of "settled science" behind the rising oceans phenomenon.

I have flown Taipei to San Francisco a few times.
I might look into taking a boat next time.
He must have made the wrong turn over Macho Grande.
You can’t expect a show like “Gilligan’s Island” to be too accurate but sometimes it just got a bit too hard to believe.
One thing which sort of irritated me was at times the island was shown to be only a couple of hundred feet long then at others it had a volcano, enough room for Wrongway Feldman to land his plane and live and the others not even know he was there.
When it gets too bad I just remember Mary Ann and those shorts.
Tie me kangaroo down.
Sounds like my Waze when entered wrong LOL
No way!
Otto the Pilot would never let that happen!
And especially after he was ‘pumped up’.
Gilligan’s Island and the island where The Village was both had some wacky geography.
Seems to still be a trend of relying on autopilot and navigation systems without asserting critical judgement on whether the flight is proceeding properly. Compass heading should have been a tip-off of misdirection in play. That sudden unexpected jog across the other runway on engaging autopilot is another heads-up missed.
Surely, you are joking.
