Miami-Dade County says a womans open-air tree house was built illegally, is unsafe and must be demolished in the next four months.
The Miami Herald reports Shawnee Chasser refuses to remove her tree house nestled against the forked trunks of an oak and strangler fig in the wooded front yard of her late sons Biscayne Gardens home.
The fight sets up an only-in-Miami showdown between a $7 billion government and a 65-year-old grandmother who sells bags of organic popcorn at Whole Foods.
Im not taking down anything, Chasser vowed during an interview. Ill chain myself to that tree house. Chasser, who discovered her aversion to indoor living decades ago, has slept in a tree since 1992 after she moved her family back to Miami from California.

Radagast’s girlfriend or ex-wife?
You have no idea how humid and bug (with zika virus) infested that place is right now. Looks OK in the picture, though. Nice and tropical.
What's the fun in that?
There's no front door to blow up...
But it looks like a fun sort of crazy!
Maybe she could get the EPA to complete a site inspection and remediation plan. That might buy her five more years!
If that was in california she would have been arrested for molesting an oak tree.
Straight out of Haight Ashbury in the sixties!!! Hasn’t had a shampoo or haircut since!
.
Judging by the photos, I’d say that jealousy is the only problem.
.
So the whole story line is untrue - she SLEEPS in the tree house and everything else is at ground level including a kitchen...Thanks for the whole picture..
You VILL conform!! or else!
I bet all her grandkid’s friends wish their granny was like her.
“...is unsafe ,”
Hmmm. If 24 years is correct, then the structure has survived at least 4 hurricanes.

She loses some sympathy from me when she has a picture of Huey Newton in her living room.
She's clearly an old hippy, but honoring Huey Newton, a Black Panther leader from the 60s, is definitely over the top for me too. I hadn't noticed that pic.

Haight Ashbury was a middle class neighborhood that happened to be near the Golden Gate Park Panhandle.
The kids that swarmed there in 66/67 were from mostly very wealthy liberal families, and had never had a care in the world.
Their hippie garb was part of the total put-on. They had check books and credit cards up the wazoo.
Scott McKenzie’s song was catchy, but told mostly lies. They were not “gentle people,” they were thugs and thieves when their money got cut off.

I know a few people that sleep in their gazebo or screen rooms. What’s the big deal?
.
.
Yep!

Always fascinating when you read the comments and learn the rest of the story. That is why FR is such an excellent source of information.
