Haight Ashbury was a middle class neighborhood that happened to be near the Golden Gate Park Panhandle.
The kids that swarmed there in 66/67 were from mostly very wealthy liberal families, and had never had a care in the world.
Their hippie garb was part of the total put-on. They had check books and credit cards up the wazoo.
Scott McKenzie’s song was catchy, but told mostly lies. They were not “gentle people,” they were thugs and thieves when their money got cut off.
