That lady is an example if why I no longer shake hands with people (I will if I’m agreeing to something)....eeewwwww. The practice of hand shaking with EVERYONE drives me crazy...I’d rather give a hug or bump elbows...and that’s what I tell people (and do) with those who want to shake my hand.
I was surprised at the studies I read. Even cold water and no soap - for one minute under running water - JUST as effective at getting rid of germs.
Antibacterial soap is a scam imho. And hand sanitizers are defiinitely not good substitutes for hand washing.

I’d much prefer to not shake hands with everybody too, but some inevitably would be offended. Just yesterday, while sitting in a circle for Sunday school, the man next to me kept coughing into his hand. Then came time to pray, and we all join hands to do such, ugh. It’s similar to the passing of the peace when the congregation all gets up and shakes hands and/or hugs one another. I just resign myself to knowing I’ll be touching all kinds of germs, and remain vigilant to not touch my face at all until after I’ve had a chance to wash my hands.
I strongly suspect my viral infections of cold/flue spawn secondary infections involving bacteria. Why? Maybe it is the green/yellow snot that always goes with them. Or maybe experience has taught me a single dose of an antibiotic will leave me feeling great in 24 hours or less.
A vet treating my dog for a viral infection gave him an antibiotic. Said the antibiotic would deal with the secondary infection and allow the body to then concentrate on the virus.
You are replying to comments made by freeper Don W. However, what you say seems to make sense as well, particularly the last part regarding the case with your dog. But then I don't know very much about the subject. I was more agreeing with Don W's comments about how some people take antibiotics thinking it will kill a virus. ie, cure their cold.
Silly me, thinking everyone was supposed to receive due process through the judicial system. I guess giving that power to an unelected bureaucracy is just as good.
I am so thankful we have such caring and benevolent overlords watching out for us all. I am grateful they are not beholden to special interests or political favors.

Forbidding fraud does not a nanny state make. It’s a lefit function of the government.
The Constitution should be enforced above all. Essential to Constitutional rule is due process, even if one accepts that the content of soap is a legitimate concern of the federal government.
(The diktat of the FDA explicitly rules, IIRC, what chemicals are even ALLOWED in the materials—not merely the supposed claims of the companies.)
I too have a little issue with the “greet your neighbour” habit many churches have acquired.
I am quite happy to shake the hand of someone I am formally introduced to, provided I have the option of declining the handshake or there is a way I can wash up before touching anything or anyone I care about. A total stranger in a church I am only at because I am travelling on a Sunday? Not so much, really. I have no opportunity to wash up, between handshakes or before the sermon. I will NOT leave the pews before the sermon is over unless there is an EXTREME reason to do so.
Locals have immunities I do not, and I have immunities they do not.
While travelling, I REALLY don’t want to catch the local version of Montecuzoma’s Revenge, or any other common malady. I’m saddened that you might take offense, but do you really want to experience the Yellowknife version of Norwalk virus?
Interesting that all soap does, really, is make the water wetter, get rid of surface tension.
And of course, to get really germ free, scrub the nails and wash under rings. I REALLY hate getting sick.
And toxic crap in products. In the Middle Ages, they had guilds to watch out for bad things in bakers’ bread, etc.
Supposedly the German formulation had emollients that offset the effects of the alcohol on the skin. I used to have a couple small bottles around, picked up at the MEDICA Fair, and it didn’t seem at all harsh. I never delved into it further because I’d always worked on the export side, with mostly US products, and had neither the contacts nor the interest in trying to import the product. I know those outside the industry might be surprised, but FDA frightens off a lot of small and medium size overseas companies, and quite a few US startups, making really good and unique products we could use.

I don’t think you are hearing me. I don’t think the government should control the content of soap.
I do think the government should prosecute fraud/false advertising/contracts.
If fraud is being perpetrated by soap companies, or false advertising is being done, or a contract not being adhered to, yes, the government should be involved, whether it’s a soap company or a widget company, makes no difference.
Joined my 80 year old mother and her husband at a Christmas eve service in far away city from us a few years ago...lady greeter at door shook everyones hand while telling us she was sick...got in Church...so much hacking...I think I had a handwipe I shared with my husband...went to visiting room after service...another lady wanted to shake my hand ...I told her I was not well...she said “me too”...and stuck her hand out. Long story short...we left town...my mother & husband ended up VERY sick with flu. I no longer care if people are offended.

I think I hear you; do you see that the government, without due process through the judicial branch, just dictated what ingredients a company can use in their personal self-cleaning products?
What part of that is constitutional?
Where do you find that authority in the Constitution?
I grant that Congress can regulate interstate commerce...but if that is the case, where did Congress pass a law regarding this issue?
Just because we’ve been tolerating this kind of overreach since the 1930s doesn’t mean it is Constitutional or moral or right. Let the government (even if it is granted there MIGHT be fraud going on) PROVE their case in court.
Right now, the industry is being FORCED to change by diktat. That is repulsive.
