OBAMA READY TO CEDE AMERICA’S CONTROL OF INTERNET...

Europe is seeking a system of ‘internet ostracism’ to regulate ALL domain names [aka web addresses] throughout the world.

We need McConnell. If McConnell really wants to hurt the Tea Party as badly as he claims, then this is the way to do it. So now we are in the humiliating position of needing to bend a knee to him.

http://betanews.com/2016/01/24/the-clock-is-ticking-for-the-us-to-relinquish-control-of-icann/

The above link is packed with empty assurances, but here’s the ‘meat’ ...

‘For decades, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) - the non profit organization that manages IP addresses and domain names - has been overseen by the US Department of Commerce ... Most upset are those who point to the independent nature of the internet, and the need for any body with global power to be similarly indpendent. Later this year ICANN is set - at long last - to completely separate from the US government.

While this does hinge on US government approval, by the end of September, ICANN could instead be in the hands of businesses, individuals, and multiple global governments.

[The tacit concern is over US surveillance by the NSA etc. But how does control of domain names affect that?]

In February, Congress will hear plans for how the transition process could work. The current contract between ICANN and the government is due to expire on 30 September - unless there are governmental protests about how the handover could happen, this deadline should be allowed to naturally expire.

The new arrangement, announced back in March 2014, would introduce a great degree of diversity of oversight, although ICANN insists that despite the involvement of the US government, it has still been able to operate independently.

... Ultimately, this is little more than a common sense PR move that decentralizes control of the internet.

... a move to a more diverse structure should mean that it is better at self-policing and allows for far greater transparency and accountability ...

I also added the ‘Weird News’ ping list because this is such a weird moment. Besides, it’s been years since i ‘spammed’ the Weird News list.

The best thing that could ever happen to mankind is if we lost the internet. And Hollywood.

I called my “representatives” in DC, and none of them claimed to know anything about it.

I’ll take whatever pings I can get for this thread.

People can call me a kook, but that makes Drudge just as kooky.

Thank you and FRegards ....

‘The best thing that could ever happen to mankind is if we lost the internet.’

Mark my words — if we lose control of the internet, it will get MORE SICK than ever!

Good grief. Do you think that the rest of the world would crack down on child porn, rape-porn, etc?

The only difference is that Jim Robinson would lose his domain name, Drudge would lose his domain name, etc.

The smut will only get five times worse.

The fact that we must beg them is the exact reason we despise them. Besides, they have proven time and again that they will just ignore our pleas.

Thank you for calling congress, and it’s alarming that they know nothing about this.

Congress had stonewalled the giveaway back in 2014 if I recall. If we make them feel like heroes, they might do it again.

Hanging in to the end, which evidently won’t be long now.

You’d think people who depend on the internet for their livelihoods would be screming bloody murder.

Please be sure to call the senate specifically. There are treaty aspects to this scheme.

Well if you and Drudge are kooky, then so is The Wall Street Journal, Breitbart, and the Daily Mail in the U.K.

Won’t matter, they haven’t denied Obama before and they aren’t going to over this.

‘ICANN reform’ is the wording we need to remember.

Congress would not have ‘internet giveaway’ filed in its system.

Please consider a temporary tagline:
