Back in 1933, a 22-year-old Lucille Ball had just landed her first movie role in Roman Scandals and signed a contract with RKO. What's a soon-to-be movie star to do? Buy a house, of course. Which is why she snatched up this bungalow on the border of West Hollywood so she could be close to all the action.

Same here in Pittsburgh. A neighborhood called Lawrenceville. Little row houses owned by struggling mill workers in the 19th. Century. By the late 20th. it was a crime-infested rathole. I worked with a girl who lived there fifteen years ago, and always felt like I should follow her home after work to ensure that she made it OK.

Today it is gentrifying at breakneck speed. Millenial YUPPIE types with more money than brains are shelling out big six-figure numbers for those places.

If you wanted regular work, being a card-carrying Communist was a big help.

Fast-forward to today, the only thing that's changed is that it's now they're called "Democrats".

I was born in Fullerton and grew up there. Well, maybe I never grew up, but you know what I mean.

McCarthy had nothing to do with HUAC. It was a House commitee which was off and running in 1947, years before he ever mentioned communism.

I can’t research all the way back to when Ball owned it, but in 1956 it was bought for a small enough price that the deed of trust on it was only $7000.

No unreasonable to assume a total purchase price of $9K or thereabouts.

I’ve heard John Wayne’s testimony at HUAC was inspiring. I have never been able to find a transcript. I just heard part of it once on talk radio. Anyone know how to find it? I couldn’t find it on Google.

It ain`t so, she knew absolutly nothing about politics at the time and joined to plese her grand father.

In the forties she was a democrat and became a republican through the fifties, she later decided politics was not for her.

Desi Arnaz donated money to anti-Castro groups.

I thought Desi said that, so I looked it up. http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/08/12/lucy-the-red/

"Arnaz was hysterical in defense of his wife, saying, “Lucy has always had a clear conscience about this. She has never been a Communist, and what’s more, she hates every Communist in Hollywood.” He later told a live audience before the taping of one the shows, “The only thing red about Lucy is her hair, and even that’s not legitimate.” Groan."

Ball was “cleared” by HUAC, and maniacal FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover declared that I Love Lucy was among his “favorites of the entertainment world.”

You are correct. McCarthy's hearings were a completely separate matter, but the left likes to say that the HUAC hearings were what helped embolden Sen. McCarthy to take things further.

I was merely pointing out the historical fact that the excesses of the Communists in Hollywood played a big role in starting this war.

It is just another case where the aggressor left claims the mantle of the victim.

Hollywood still suffers. Not easy to get an acting job if you are a republican. Many keep quiet just to have work.

Another interesting detail about Lucille Ball is that she is a descendant of Rev. John Crandall, one of the early settlers of Rhode Island as are thousands of other Americans including myself, my wife and Dezi. This makes us both distant cousins to our spouses.
