Attn: Navy Vets
Need help locating crew list information for USS Kidd [DDG-993].
My friend's brother recently died and he is in the process of having his brother inured at Arlington National Cemetery. I am helping him, as I have buried several members of my family there.
My friend is trying to gather the pertinent documents required to proceed [DD-214, death certificate, etc.], but has little info on his brother's service at this time. One thing he does have is a "Plank Owner" plaque from the ship's commissioning.
I am trying to find an official site on the Internet that lists the commissioning crew, but have not yet had success.
Any thoughts as how to proceed? Help will be appreciated.
Did you try HullNumber.com?
Yup. Most sites depend on voluntary signups. I’m looking for a roster from DoD or the Naval Institute or some such. Saves a lot of time if one is available.
Have you tried the museum in Baton Rouge? They are having some issues due to the flooding.

IIRC, a direct family member can get a copy of his DD214.
If it were me, I would contact my congressman’s Washington office.

http://www.hullnumber.com/crew1.php?cm=DDG-993 - partial crew list
https://www.facebook.com/groups/152152201510788 - USS KIDD Plank Owners Association Facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/kych33 - Steve Morrison, USS KIDD Plank Owners Association leader
http://www.archives.gov/veterans - Federal government website to search for veterans records
These may help. But your friend should take all the information he has and visit the County Veterans Service Officer normally located in his county courthouse. The Veterans Service Officer will know how to obtain the DD214.
That’s a good site, but dedicated to DDG-661, the original USS Kidd [Fletcher Class Destroyer].
Will this help?

I hope this helps you to get your friend’s brother into Arlington. May he rest in peace.

Many ships and units have their own Facebook pages, friends and family members can also use to search.
Just found out my dad was on DD 693 which was an amazing ship. Wish he would have told us the stories when he was alive.
I guess someone could get inured to being interred.
As the next of kin of the deceased, you should contact the nearest VA office. They will assist you in filing the necessary fedgov forms to obtain a copy of the DD214, which can be used to gain permission to access the service records of the deceased that contain all of the pertinent information required to prove eligibility for burial in Arlington National Cemetery, including all tours of duty and military honors and decorations.
