They've been defensive for decades in preserving the purity of the language of love from the threat of globalisation.
But now it seems all will have paid off for the French, whose language is set to become the world's most spoken language by 2050, thanks to growing francophone populations in sub-Saharan Africa.
While the top languages in the world today are Mandarin, English, Spanish, and Arabic, Natixis has produced figures that show French will be number one in 35 years time.

Mandarin and Cantonese is not a clear distinction, since many actually speak both.
Written Chinese however is constant among the entire country, and among all Chinese everywhere. With the exception, that there are more complex characters used in Taiwan and away from China, than the slightly more simple characters actually used in China.

Since the middle of the last century, things have shifted in the global scientific community. English is now so prevalent that in some non-English speaking countries, like Germany, France, and Spain, English-language academic papers outnumber publications in the countrys own language several times over. In the Netherlands, one of the more extreme examples, this ratio is an astonishing 40 to 1.
Chapeau means ‘hat’.
Oeuf means ‘egg’.
It’s like those French have a different word for everything.
