Inside the Failing Mission to Tame Trump’s Tongue
New York Times ^ | August 13, 2016 | ALEXANDER BURNS and MAGGIE HABERMAN

...

Nearly two months later, the effort to save Mr. Trump from himself has plainly failed. He has repeatedly signaled to his advisers and allies his willingness to change and adapt, but has grown only more volatile and prone to provocation since then, clashing with a Gold Star family, making comments that have been seen as inciting violence and linking his political opponents to terrorism.

Advisers who once hoped a Pygmalion-like transformation would refashion a crudely effective political showman into a plausible American president now increasingly concede that Mr. Trump may be beyond coaching. He has ignored their pleas and counsel as his poll numbers have dropped, boasting to friends about the size of his crowds and maintaining that he can read surveys better than the professionals.

In private, Mr. Trump’s mood is often sullen and erratic, his associates say. He veers from barking at members of his staff to grumbling about how he was better off following his own instincts during the primaries and suggesting he should not have heeded their calls for change.

He broods about his souring relationship with the news media, calling Mr. Manafort several times a day to talk about specific stories. Occasionally, Mr. Trump blows off steam in bursts of boyish exuberance: At the end of a fund-raiser on Long Island last week, he playfully buzzed the crowd twice with his helicopter.

But in interviews with more than 20 Republicans who are close to Mr. Trump or in communication with his campaign, many of whom insisted on anonymity to avoid clashing with him, they described their nominee as exhausted, frustrated and still bewildered by fine points of the political process and why his incendiary approach seems to be sputtering.

He is routinely preoccupied with perceived slights

Tame Trump’s tongue? Get real! People love hearing the truth for a change. We haven’t heard it for several decades.

“why bother posting this crap?”

I understand why a lot of people wouldn’t want this garbage here, but for the most part I think it’s better that we know what B.S. the other side is pushing now. It’s really important that we go out and try to convince other people to vote for Trump, and we need to be prepared for whatever garbage arguments they may have against him (fed to them by a biased media trying to deceive them).

Yes that’s the ticket. Trump should fight back and say the MSM is trying to make him be politically correct but he is not PC. Call them out.

It has nothing to do with Trump’s comments.

It’s all about an agreed upon agenda in the vast majority of the media to push the same talking points.

Take “Founder” of ISIS as an example. Can anyone truly say they do not completely understand that statement? Obama helped give rise to ISIS. So did Clinton. That’s what ‘founder’ means.

why bother posting this crap?

Why indeed? Reaganaut1 is simply helping to spread democrat propaganda. "Why" is the question here.

Sorry but I disagree. Freepers are well aware of the slanted media coverage and the all-out war that the media have launched against Trump in order to destroy him and get their beloved Clintons back in the White House.

We don't need that garbage posted here so relentlessly. I think there was a point last week where every single thread in the Latest Posts area was an anti-Trump article. I shut Free Republic off in disgust and went to Netflix to watch a movie. I'm not quite so sure those Freepers are posting that stuff here to "educate us on what the other side is saying" but instead are likely bitter Cruz supporters who just want to take an opportunity to try and say "I told you so."

I would like to see a little more positivity on the Free Republic. Not this relentless gloom and doom. We are never going to get the media on our side. So we might as well buck up and stop agonizing over every single media hit piece.

I saw a very positive Trump rally last night in Connecticut. Thousands of people turned out in brutal heat and only THREE protesters in the entire crowd of thousands. I think that bodes very well for Mr. Trump regardless of the media onslaught against him.

If we all do our part and vote this November, I'm confident we will have the outcome that most of us want.

I wonder what mindless C-sucker lays awake at night to think this up.

They are really grasping at whatever they can make up to stop Trump.

I haven’t watched TV since the OJ trial. I feel so much more relaxed than I did when I constantly heard, “We’re all gonna die!!! Film at eleven.”

Seriously? Wow... Good for you! Re: OJ, I will never forget that day... I felt the same ONLY Hundred times worse when Comey gave the witch a pass...

I have not watch regular TV for about 5 years now... I get all my info through various online sources.

So FREEING!

The actual failed mission is to get the so-called "leaders" of this nation to stop being such childish wimps and lead. Mere words scare these pussies!

Thanks for posting. I, for one, need to know what my NY family and colleagues are filling their minds with. It helps on a lot of levels.

It doesn’t poison my mind. It’s not like reading bad grammar or listening to off key music. I just skim it, find the flaws, like, ‘people close to Trump’ and I get the picture

People fall for the scam being perpetrated on them. I don’t know a quick answer. But they do

You’re probably right about the sheer volume of negative articles and too few positive ones here. We need to know the good things too and to keep the troops energized, hopeful, and fighting.

But, even though it raises my blood pressure, I do like know the specific propaganda arguments against Trump. I’ve tried to dispel the fears before of on-the-fence voters about Trump—and have been disturbed at what some of those media-induced fears are. It’s best to already be familiar with all the talking points and to have counter arguments ready. That’s why I sometimes venture into the dark waters of Politico, Slate, The Hill, HuffPost, etc. (although less so here lately—there’s only so much a person’s nerves can take).

Don’t care about the “tongue”. We will live or die by the man behind it, and most of us don’t want him to turn into a self-editing politically-correct focus-group tested teleprompter reader. If being himself and saying things the way ordinary Americans say them costs us the election, well then it will just hasten the day of reckoning that will not be far off.

Nothing any media is saying will change who I vote for, nor most others. This is for the undecideds (whoever they are) or those who are too chicken to express a real preference. Again, we will either get enough votes and win or we will lose, but the outcome will not hinge on trying to turn Trump into something he isn’t and never will be.

I don’t want him “tamed” or “refashioned” or “coached,” or polished up in anyway. I don’t want a career politician. I don’t want business as usual. I want a real live person who isn’t obsessed with kissing other countries’ butts. I want a loose cannon who’ll make the rest of the world back off, get their hands out of our pockets, and get nervous.
