1.Priestly celibacy is not the issue married men are more likely to abuse children than unmarried 2.Most child abuse takes place within the home. 3.All religious groups have pedophile scandals, and the Catholics (while the largest religious group) are at the bottom of the list statistically. 4.Child abuse is prevalent in all areas of society: schools, youth organizations, sports, etc. 5.Statistically, of all the professions, Christian clergy are least likely to offend. Doctors, Farmers and Teachers are the professions most likely to abuse childrennot clergy. 6.Among clergy offenders Catholic priests are least likely to offend. 7.Catholic cases of pedophilia make more headlines because of anti Catholic prejudice and because the Catholic Church is bigger and more lucractive to sue. 8.Pedophilia and Euphebophilia are different problems. The former is sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children. The latter is attraction to teenagers. Most cases branded pedophila are actually euphebophila. 9.Most of the cases of euphebophilia are homosexual in nature, however the politically correct do not want this problem to be associated with homosexuality. 10.The number of Catholic priests guilty of pedophilia is very small. 11.What we now call cover up was often done in a different cultural context, when the problem was not fully understood and when all establishment organizations hushed scandals. They did so for what seemed good reasons at the time: protection of the victims and their families, opportunity for rehabilitation of the offender, the avoidance of scandal to others. It is unfair to judge events thirty years ago by todays standards. 12.When lawsuits are looming people smell money. We must be wary of false accusations. 13.The accused must be entitled to a fair hearing. The church should insist on hard proof of the abuse, and for the sake of justice, ensure that the innocent are not prosecuted. - (continued)

“Just an observation here, but a treatise on Clergy and pedophilia from a Penn State professor is rather ironic, isnt it?”
Painting with a broad brush there, aren’t you?
Not really...In my mind PSU has a stained history when it comes to things of this nature. One has been more or less litigated and the other washed over.
We had a FReeper who for years persisted here trying to refute the myth that JoPa was completely innocent and such. AND we’ve had the Michael Mann Hockey Stick crap which they’ve used time and remembrance to cover up the lies.
[I once sent an email about Mann to PSU telling the PSO that PSU needed to investigate his “scholarship” and the validity of his “peer review” claims. I got back an email addressed to “Dear Citizen of the Globe.” What do you think it said.
PSU is stained (at least through my lifetime). If I can perpetuate that I’ll certainly try.
My own personal statistics:
I’m Catholic and never knew of anyone abused by a priest.
I was also in the public school system and knew three students that had sex w/teachers.
Though I have heard abuse reported in the news by both priests and teachers, I hear such stories far more often with teachers.
Let’s see it. Put up or shut up.
Though I have heard abuse reported in the news by both priests and teachers, I hear such stories far more often with teachers.
...
The proportion of news articles on the subject posted here on FR seem to back that up.
Re : Post # 20
~ Basically the article puts forth the argument everybody does it as if that makes it right. ~
I respectfully disagree. The article puts forth the argument (imho) that media bias adds fuel to the Anti-Catholic fire currently raging...
Dominus vobiscum
It’s standard knowledge to know that journalist have the highest rate of pedophilia.
I think it’s clear, when it comes to one’s alma mater, football team, or church, excuses for pedophilia abound. Humans, gotta love ‘em.
Re : Post # 28
“See the reason why journalist have always tried to say priest have a higher than normal rate of pedophiles (which is NOT a fact) is because journalist have always had the highest percentage of pedophilia.”
A quote attributed to Søren Aabye Kierkegaard :
“No profession in the eyes of God is lower than that of Journalist.”
What? No. Ephebephilia is a better descriptor for what the priests were doing because it means preying on adolescent males, which is what they were doing. Pedophilia means preying on children under puberty.
You give me one story and that’s proof?
Pathetic
Justifying sin by saying everyone does it. It’s not pedophilia because so many of the victims were teen agents
This is just sickening. Accept that the American Catholic clergy is corrupt and get on with it
Oh yeah
Journalists do not hold positions of authority over young people. Priests and pastors are in positions of trust
Do not diminish the ruination that offending priests protected by their bishops caused
Well said
And is a pointless argument in the case of male priests violating you boys
Homosexuals infiltrating the church is a problem. They do this in a lot of institutions.
Since you weren’t in on the sessions you don’t know what you are blathering about
It is not unusual to see drug abuse in reaction to being sexually abused by someone you trust.
Really please cite. Otherwise quit spewing
Priests hold a different position in ones life than jornalists
