PepsiCo is at long last bringing Crystal Pepsi back to stores nationwide later this summer.

A crystal clear version of Pepsi will be available in 20-ounce bottles August 8 in the United States. Originally launched back in 1993 alongside a massive marketing campaign, the gimmick didn’t really resonate with consumers, prompting Pepsi to pull the product just one year later.

Huh, never tried it when it was out before, will give it a go this time. Don’t know why they bothered, regular Pepsi over ice was fine with me. Must be a novelty thing or some such silly-ass crap, but most times manufacturers screw with a product, they tend to bone it up.

“In-store marketing will include push-button devices that play the 1990s-era song “Whoomp! (There It Is).”

So it failed when marketed before by Whoomp! is gonna sell it this time?

I used to love crystal Pepsi. When they decided to take it off the market, I ran around to as many stores as I could trying to buy them out until I realized I would only be able to drink so much before it expired. I also hope they don’t poison it with HFCS and I hope they don’t make the mistake of turning it into a citrus flavored drink again.

There is no way I can describe the original taste. Not quite Pepsi but brighter. It was smooth and delicious ice cold. I’ll be checking the store tomorrow, but it probably won’t taste like I remember. A quarter century later, my taste buds have surely changed or they will have cheapened the formula.

[[When it originally launched in the early 1990s it was backed by a $40 million ad budget. But the soda flopped as consumers grew disenchanted with clear sodas…]]

They spent 40 millions dollars and it flopped .
Why would they try it again ?

Because it’s a “classic” now. Pepsi brass are hoping the nostalgia wins people over to it.

Soda sales are down. Maybe they are hoping people confuse it with bottled water ?

I don’t know if this iteration of Crystal Pepsi tastes like a cola or not, but it will have high fructose corn syrup, and, unlike the 1993 Crystal Pepsi, has caffeine in it.

It’s been available here in Canada for about a month now.

Tastes like a “cleaner” version of Pepsi. I hope it sticks around this time because I’m a sucker for 80’s and 90’s nostalgic goodies.

I think the “crystal clear” version was to counter the buggaboo about the caramel coloring in colas being carcinogenic. And it is.

The FDA sez that if you drink a gallon of the straight undiluted caramel coloring every day for 5 years, you might get cancer......or something along those lines.

That crappy Zima drink came out in 93 as well. I think all these clear drinks must have been marketed to women, at least in my crowd a guy drinking Zima raised eyebrows.

Zima was invented because saying “b1tch beer” in public was becoming frowned upon...

Zima always seemed gross, maybe because I thought clear soda was gross, like thicker cornsyrupy water or something.

Crystal Pepsi, Zima, Tab Clear...

There was a thing about clear sodas being more pure in 1993, and that fad did not last.

You may be on to something there.

It is very rare that my husband does the grocery shopping, but a few months ago he picked up a few items as the grocery store. On the list was seltzer. I have gotten him away from soda, but we both drink seltzer. Usually, I buy whichever seltzer is the cheapest

I read labels, and he does not. What he brought home was on sale and right next to the seltzer on the shelf. It was some sort of artificially sweetened carbonated beverage. Totally disgusting.

“On the list was seltzer.”

The return of Crystal Pepsi is due to the internet lol In fact a youtube influencer who goes by LABeast made this his cause and his million plus followers assisted with the challenge to bring back Crystal Pepsi.
