Why Do People Say Muslim Now Instead of Moslem?

Is it Muslim or Moslem?

When Baby Boomers were children it was Moslem. The American Heritage Dictionary (1992) noted,"Moslem is the form predominantly preferred in journalism and popular usage. Muslim is preferred by scholars and by English-speaking adherents of Islam." No more. Now, almost everybody uses Muslim.

According to the Center for Nonproliferation Studies,"Moslem and Muslim are basically two different spellings for the same word." But the seemingly arbitrary choice of spellings is a sensitive subject for many followers of Islam. Whereas for most English speakers, the two words are synonymous in meaning, the Arabic roots of the two words are very different. A Muslim in Arabic means"one who gives himself to God," and is by definition, someone who adheres to Islam. By contrast, a Moslem in Arabic means"one who is evil and unjust" when the word is pronounced, as it is in English, Mozlem with a z.

For others, this spelling differentiation is merely a linguistic matter, with the two spellings a result of variation in transliteration methods. Both Moslem and Muslim are used as nouns. But some writers use Moslem when the word is employed as an adjective.

Journalists switched to Muslim from Moslem in recent years under pressure from Islamic groups. But the use of the word Moslem has not entirely ceased. Established institutions which used the older form of the name have been reluctant to change. The American Moslem Foundation is still the American Moslem Foundation (much as the NAACP is still the NAACP--the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). The journal The Moslem World--published by the Hartford Seminary in Connecticut--is still The Moslem World.

I love the way everyone on tv pronounces it ‘moooooslim’ in that fake middle-eastern way. The same way they go all Spanish lingo when they pronounce ‘junta’ or ‘chile.’ It makes them think they’re smart but they sound like appeasing idiots.

I’ll say islamic freaks, myself.

Completely distorting pronunciation of foreign words is a hallmark to this day of the British.

I thought (and completely agree with) the Brits limited that distorting to only French words.

I understand your point of view. I respect reasons why I think you hold it. However, I think we err when we try so hard to correct others so dogmatically and abruptly in the area of belief. Most respectfully we will need to agree to disagree on this one.

I do wish you well and I’m grateful for the heart you have for our Lord and the service you no doubt render to Him.

disndat wrote ‘give oneself to God’ and I simply tried to point out that it might be more to the point to write ‘give oneself to allah’

I cringe every time I see allah equated to the God of the Old Testament. The origin of the name allah is from an ancient Arabian word for Venus.

When I was a child in New Zealand I learnt that the moslems wanted to kill me because I was a Christian...

I never heard or read the word muslim until recently...

especially the way Obama says it in that oily caressing way...

I have never used the word muslim...

they remain moslems to me...

and they still want to kill me because I’m a Christian..

I prefer, for my authority, the First edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, 1771.

The proper traditional English name is Mahometans.

If it was good enough for 18th Century England and U.S., it's good enough for me.

Never heard of any word in any language that would not "work" had it not changed, except perhaps the maddening habit of silent or weirdly morphed consonants.

Beats me. I’m still saying “mahometans” and referring to the “alcoran”.

Either moslem or muslim works for me...I never capitalize either one, as these seventh-century savages are not worthy.

>> Is it Muslim or Moslem?

Doesn’t matter — just a classification for Islam’s warriors, minions, and captives.

Islam is a war plan.

I’m 70. I had never heard of Moslems until in 1963 we got
a Moslem girl as an exchange student. Teachers told us
their name for “God” was Allah. First I’d heard of it; had
never heard of “Islam” before.

She seemed to be a “nice” person. Died several years ago.
Had gone back to Turkey & married a fellow Moslem, had kids.
Of course, she was from a rich family.

I use several words, usually not capitalized.

Committing offense against the written English language which rules that proper nouns are capitalized. Respect has nothing to do with it.

What do you have against our great language to trash disregard established rules in such a way to diminish this language's effectiveness?

"I don't like muslims so I'm not going to capitalize them" is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
