For these post-Reagan Republicans, conservative was passé. They needed to be compassionate conservatives, as if there were something vaguely inhumane about the liberty enterprise. Government was no longer the necessary evil envisioned by the Framers, the butt of the Gippers aforementioned quip. It was our beneficent guardian who has got to move whenever somebody hurts.
These Republicans doubled the national debt before Obama came along to double it again. The new and improved GOP swelled the size and scope of government; created new entitlements even as the existing ones were bankrupting us; enacted campaign-finance reform well aware that it flouted the First Amendment; and derided their own base as racist xenophobes for resisting amnesty for illegal aliens. And was there any Obama overreach that they werent happy to foot the bill for?
Take away the conservatism, the limited-government constitutionalism, the devotion to liberty, the fiscal discipline, the clear-eyed recognition of Americas enemies, and what are you left with? A Republican party whose only real boast is that it can do statism with more adult moderation than the hard Left that has captured the Democratic party. To the extent that, a generation ago, Republican was fairly thought synonymous with conservative, it thus became a party Republican in name only a party in which all principles were negotiable.
That made it a party ripe to be taken over by Donald Trump. But what is now officially Trumps party has not been my party for quite some time.
Whoever wins, I know that come January, I will be in the conservative opposition to a statist administration, and in search of a new party to call home.

Professional conservatives made a living selling fear of Obama and the Clintons and doing nothing substantive to stop them. Now that the opportunity to stop them and recover the nation presents itself they walk on by with their principles leaving the robbed nation to die in the dust.
He was a FAILED prosecutor on terrorism and key figure in a cover up of the extensive FBI involvement in the 1993 WTC bombing.
He’s a big fan of the grossly uncivilized practice of torture as well, IIRC.
Just another corrupt villain we would all be better off without.
Is Trump the perfect candidate for the GOP? At a time when over half the population is receiving some form of government assistance I see him as the only one who was in the field this time around who has a realistic chance of winning. Every election cycle winning against the party of handout recipients and new immigrants gets a little more difficult to defeat.
It does not matter how wonderful some of the other candidates might have been. None of them generated the excitement Trump has. All would have been easily defeated by the MSM, the Clinton Crime Syndicate and their massive war chest. Seriously what is the NRO thinking? Are Mitt Romney, John McCain or any of the Bushes “more conservative” than Donald Trump? If you answer yes, by what measures? We really had to hold our noses the last two presidential election cycles. With the exception of Sarah Palin there were nothing but losers on the last two tickets. And the NRO was all in for them. Why?
He’s right. Cut and run traitors who go AWOL with Americans dead by the dozens on the battlefield (Orlando, Dallas, etc.) have no place in the party of Lincoln and Reagan. Good riddance.
“Trumps statements in the aftermath of the Turkey failed/choreographed coup were incorrect.”
If that coup had been meant to succeed, Erdogan’s plane would have been shot down, or attacked while it was parked on the runway.
I went to the NYT link where McCarthy referenced what Trump said about the coup and IMO, McCarthy did his best to paint Trump’s comments in the worst possible light.
As possibly the next POTUS, should he have come out lamenting the fact that the coup against Erdogan failed?
These are exactly the type of “gotcha” questions Republicans have been letting the press suck them into for as long as I can remember.
I’m taking this on faith that Trump knows exactly what kind of asshole Erdogan is, but now is not the time to deal with him.
Time and again, Trump is proving, at least to me, that he’s too smart to get sucked into playing the oppositions games.
In the case of your story it appears to come from a blog that’s a mouthpiece for Lyndon LaRouche ... did you know that?
I suggest he review the Wikileaks #DNCLeaks/#DNCleak and make some different conclusions.
I used to like Andy McCarthy, he used to be pretty good at assessing political situations. But now, with this article he has gone off the deep end, Too bad. I hope he recovers his sanity.

“The neocons took over the National Review when Bill Buckley went all soft on us and fired Sam Francis, PJB et al over the whole Searching for Anti-Semitism schtick back in 1994. Its a neocon (Trotskyite) rag. It hasnt been our mag for well over 20 years now.”
Absolutely right. I once read it cover to cover. And then it became a neocon rag. At least the writers at Pravda knew that they were cranking out crap, whereas the junior league Trotsky brigade who took over NR believed their own garbage. Bill Buckley must have been suffering from dementia when he handed them his magazine.
It never was, Andy.
Your crowd all hang out over on the other side of the room, underneath that large, hanging letter "D."
I haven’t read National Review for more than 10 years since early Bush II years. I could care less about what they say.
Totally agree. I wish they would all just shut up.
I spent the evening reading Jack Pine Radicals where all the Bernie true radicals took refuge after being run off DU.
Go over there and read through their stuff. It will give you a new perspective.
I hope you are right. It worried me that Shoebat was puzzled, too. I assume if he isn’t already, as you suggest, he will be brought up to speed in short order.
Come January, you should fall on your knees and thank God that Jeb or Hillary didn't win and do away with our borders and thus our nation.
“Go over there and read through their stuff. It will give you a new perspective.”
I looked around some and it just seems like standard leftwing prejudice and cliches. Maybe I didn’t see what caught your eye.
Numer 1 is the rush to back Jill in the Green Party.
2. Getting back at Hillary for the fix.
3. Getting the truth out on Kaine.
4. Plans to stop the war monger Hillary.
