NFL reportedly planning on embedding data chips in footballs to gauge field goals

Hey, Tom Brady — deflate this football at your own risk.

According to the Toronto Sun, the NFL is planning on inserting customized data chips into game balls for the 2016 preseason, beginning next month, and for Thursday Night Football regular-season games. The Sun reports that narrowing the goalposts could be one of the results from this experiment. Our emails and calls to the league for confirmation weren't immediately returned.

With a data chip embedded in the game balls, the league's front office could gauge how close each made field goal measures through the uprights. The NFL could also estimate how many kicks would be missed if the uprights were closer together. This comes after kickers made a whopping 84.5 percent of their field goal attempts last season, seemingly spelling that the extra three points might be too easy for teams right now and thus prompting a change.

OK, this is for the kicking game...

But with Patriot balls disappearing into other rooms pre-game, should be able to track where the Patriots' employee who labeled himself "the Deflator" (McNally) would smuggle those pre-game balls into...even if Brady continues to toss future cell phones away in order to continue covering up convos with "the Deflator" McNally (and/or Jastremski)...

The 32 best kickers in the world should kick at 84%

This would be a device that has mass — and for a football, significant mass. It will change the physics of the football.

What next?? Why don’t they just play football ??

I’m wondering why do we have umpires calling balls and strikes if you can have a computerized system doing it more accurately?

No they shouldn’t. The target should be smaller. Automatic success on a largely uncontested play is boring, boring is bad for sports.

I don’t think its a GPS tracker... it would have to be way more accurate than that. Probaby a transponder for an emitter/receiver in the goal posts themselves.

Still wonder why MLB doesn’t do something like this for balls and strikes.

It’s only 3 grams, given that their allowed variance is 40 grams (410-450) it won’t have any functional change. They are just playing football. They just want to do it better.

And yet a million people a week pay big bucks to watch it live and millions more watch at home. So maybe, just maybe, you’re full of crap and it’s a lot of fun. Just a thought.

Yeah...field goals. Right.

They want the chips to simply monitor ball pressure and report remotely directly to Goodell's smart phone.

Nah. An RFID transponder weighs about 1/100th of an ounce. It would respond to a signal from a transmitter somewhere in the end zone...or perhaps at the top of either goal post.

Think of those little white anti-shoplifting gizmos you see inside blister packaging.

Nope. They’ve specifically said it will not monitor pressure. And given how small the device is and where they’re putting it I believe them. Actually that’s a mistake on their part they actually SHOULD monitor the pressures.

84% is meaningless unless distance is factored in.

Well, it will be interesting to see. If it does not contain its own power (battery mass) then it could be pretty small. An RFID type of device would be the way to go. Passive responder. Fun stuff.

Can they find a chip that gauges how much their commissioner sucks?

Yes. They take this whole thing so damn seriously, as if it really affects the outcomes of people's lives (not counting big gamblers).

The more complez everything gets, the more time outs and possibilities for something to go wrong.

BAN helmet headsets.

BAN guys with radios and iPads watching the game from booth above.

The coaches have to be fast with hand signals, call a time out, shout out a play in code, or ... get this ... let the QB make the calls.

No more replays, bad calls stay called bad.

NO hands used by o-linemen, as in the mid 70s and earlier, as refs cannot see the holding that takes place ALL THE TIME if they don't make it otherwise.

There aren't too many field goals in the NFL, probably fewer than in the '70s, when there were maybe TWO kickers (Ray Guy, Mark Mosely) that were as good as a typical kicker today.

Cut down on the TV commercial timouts. A 60:00 game, with time outs and half-time should take three hours.

etc.

“Still wonder why MLB doesn’t do something like this for balls and strikes.”

Takes away the entertainment value. The umpire is a critical part of the game.
