Pay for public college presidents continued to climb in 2015, and a growing number of chiefs topped the $1 million mark, according to results from a new study.
The median total pay for public university presidents reached $431,000 in the 2015 fiscal year, an increase of 4.3 percent over the year before, according to an annual survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Five presidents were paid packages of more than $1 million, up from two presidents in the previous year and three in 2013.
Topping the list was Renu Khator, who was paid $1.3 million to serve as both chancellor of the University of Houston system and president of its Houston campus.
She was followed by Michael Gottfredson, former president of the University of Oregon; Michael Young, president of Texas A&M Universitys flagship campus; William McRaven, chancellor of the University of Texas system and a retired United States Navy admiral; and Mark Becker, president of Georgia State University.

$1.3 million a year to run Cougar High?

Private university presidents are paid big salaries for their fund-raising prowess. If a guy can bring in hundreds of millions in new money, a couple of million for his salary is a small price to pay.
What do these public-school presidents do? Any money-raising?
How many football coaches making more than a million a year?
here is your student loan money but millenial will attack these extorters, but they will attack poor working parents
I know Mitch Daniels would have taken a 75% pay cut to move from president at Purdue to Indiana governor.
And he’s second lowest paid president in the big 10.
The football coach, who has won I think 4 games in 3 seasons makes 4 times as much as Daniels.
Explains the super high tuition.
Yes I think a good number of public college and university presidents are involved with fund raising as well, not just from the legislature but also wealthy and not so wealthy alumni, local businesses and so forth.
Some of their fund raising may be simply getting a large business to donate the money for artificial turf for the sports fields.
Double whammy at UT——retired admiral & chancellor!!!! Nice if you can get it
Yes, they all try to raise money. My college Dean spends most of his time trying to shake the trees for more cash. That was a condition of his hiring.
Close the gender gap in university president compensation! Why are men being discriminated against when divvying up the spoils?
Why are public employees paid more than senators and the executive cabinet? Is there really such a shortage in administrative staff that wages have to be inflated to attract them?
Oh well, as long as these CEOs weren’t heading private companies, it’s OK. /S
The new president at WWU in Bellingham Wa is paid 450k+ annually. He also gets an amazing car and housing allowance.
Insane. Absolutely insane.
What an absolute waste of taxpayers’ money.
3 of the 5 from the state of Texas. Ouch.
Young at A&M is making 3x what his predecessor made. Results? We’ll see.
Well, everything is bigger in Texas, after all.
Ah, life in the non-profit sector is sweet.
ICBW, but I believe the two highest paid state employees in WV are the basketball and football coaches of WVU....in that order.
