My Mom

Posted on 07/16/2016 8:31:54 PM PDT by Empireoftheatom48

My Mom who is 101 years old fell in the bathroom, 10:30 this morning. She needed 16 stitches at the ER. Called 911 and they came firefighters first and then EMT's. Things went well, but of course she is pretty sore. However, 6:00 pm we get a doorbell ring. It's the police, they say they are here for a welfare check. Well ok, I introduce them to my Mom who is sitting in my easy chair, she is happy for the attention. So I ask is this normal procedure. Well the young policeman, says that the EMT or Firefighter, thought someone was drunk at the time. 10:30! In the morning? No one was drunk, at any time. The question is should I let this go, or get a lawyer. It really ticks me off.

I had an earlier post:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3449982/posts
where a fire dept broke into a man’s home looking for victims. His home was not on fire but was near a very small fire. In the home they find an alarm clock that looks like dynamite and a clock. Turns out it was a novelty clock that freaked out the firefighters and brought out the bomb squad.

It begs the question, as does your incident, to what extent does the fire department act as an agent of the police? I do not think this is really legal.

I do not work with vets who have close ties with animal control, humane society, or work for rescues for the same reason. they are do gooders who will cut your throat in a heart beat.

Similar thing happened to my mom in January. We think she had a stroke - but it was never confirmed. She was disoriented (for the first time ever) and my sister went over and drove her to the Hospital where she was admitted for about a week. She lives alone and the doctor said she needed 24 hour care. A week after she was home, Welfare Services stopped by and interviewed her for 30-45 minutes to see if she was ok (she had 24 hour care). They said they’d be back frequently, but we never saw them again. She’s since moved into a senior center. I think they were just doing their job - my guess is there was some misunderstanding with the paramedics.

Uh... That should be "Never let an inaccurate report stand."

Sorry. Did not mean to imply that you were a democrat.

Cops come in all the time with cause as a wellness check on the conditions of a senior citizen.
The Senior could have herself said something due to age that drew them in or a responder thought they saw or heard something.

In any case, I am 99% sure social services are coming Monday and they usually require two visits to clear up their paperwork.

Truthful statements like “Nobody Living Here Drinks” could help.
Do the elderly relatives hair and dress them nicely. Make sure they are clean and not smelly.
Do nails if that works. Show they are well kept.

The police come in first to make sure there is no obvious danger to the senior. Like finding her tied to the bed, eyes taped open looking dried eyed at a picture of Hillary.

On a drunk accusation I would expect the chances of a social worker coming in for an interview and inspection at 100%, but you might get lucky.

It’s coming. When I had a baby in the UK....after the midwifes ‘did their duty’...I was supplied a ‘case worker’ who was an effin’ Nazi.....to check up on ‘baby’....and report back to ‘state’. I kid you not. She despised my family and I.

I know, it’s like they think the government is the only caregiver and not the family. I realize some families aren’t that great but that should not mean treating everyone like scum.

Paramedics making the complaint is strong, so expect social services.

Have a log ready of doctors visits, numbers they can call of that doctor/doctors and her dentist.

They may talk diet, safety conditions at the house.
If you don’t have handicapped bars for the bathroom you may want to go to the Home Depot and have bought s couple of handles at $8 to show social sevices you were conserved and we’re taking more precautions.

This is serious stuff.

Glad to hear your mom is ok. 101? give her a hug for me. Fire/EMT see a lot of things and their concern is real despite the apparent ham-handed follow up. Count your blessings.

Let it go, sounds like you have a spectacular mom. But, lets just say someone WAS drunk at 10:30 in the morning, so what? Absolutely no one’s business and what were they going to do arrest your mom for being too old to drink, or maybe driving a house while intoxicated?

It happened to me at the E.R. Right in front of me they asked my husband if I abused him at home. (He’s 240+ and if he fell on me I’d die!!!) The swine said, “all the time”. Sigh.

Recommend you just let it go and be glad your Mother is all right. Sometimes well meaning people do stupid things. The police came, saw that everything was OK and that’s the end of it, let it be the end of it.

A welfare check probably means a nosey neighbor, a friend, or another family member called in so the police would stop by and check on her. If they checked and found nothing wrong just let it go. It’s SOP for them. They’re just following orders from dispatch. After they receive a welfare call they’re bound to follow-up. To avoid lawsuits mainly.

In your case it was EMS obviously.

They asked me that question after they had given me the pre surgery drugs.

Nurse, "Mrs. Bear is anyone abusing you at home?"

HTB, higher then a kite, "The cats walk all over me and they yell at me when their dinner is late".

Nurse, "Snicker".

Since Dec. 2012 I have lost my Dad (93), Niece (49), Mom (92) and my son (44) this past November. I would spend all my time and energy interacting with my Mom and laughing about the story. Life is too short and time so limited with loved ones. Sometimes just a few years can take away so many and things are never the same. You are lucky she’s okay and my best to her.

Let it go. It might be routine check on a vulnerable person (i.e. a vulnerable elder who might be neglected or injured by the caretaker).

Usually this is by hospital social workers or visiting nurses, but if it was a weekend, they might have asked the cops. Ditto if it was a dangerous neighborhood.

Usually I can smell one beer on the breath of a person. So it doesn't mean someone was drunk.

And if it was on a weekend, especially a holiday weekend, nearly everyone has alcohol on the breath, so better safe than sorry.

Don't sue: If you saw the amount of abuse and neglect we see in the hospital, you would thank them for caring.

I was lucky enough to work in a small town, so we knew most of our “customers” and often just asked a reliable relative to check in on them. Now with privacy laws, I'm not sure that is legal...

More likely EMT suspected elder abuse and they used the “welfare check” and “drinking” as a ruse to get in. My 2-1/ 2 year old daughter took an accidental head-first spill out of her stroller and I was given tne third-degree for the longest time in the ambulance and at the hospital.

I probably would have said something like, “all the time and I love it”, with a big grin on my face.
