New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Thanks. I’ll do that very thing!

Hopefully we’ll get all the old skin off and the rot on his tail stabilized. The hot baths are good for his digestion, and the scrubbing helps with circulation.

I thought dragons had scales instead of skin.

Well, yes. I just think of the whole set of scales covering its body as “skin.”

Sick on and off, busy in equal measure, and just plain aggravated with life this way in general.

The kudzu isn’t the problem, it’s the job being...
I’d rather deal with Kudzu.

I wish a hot bath (or shower — I’d never get all of me into this little tub) would help my digestion. My ulcers are bleeding again. Probably because of this latest thing with my DiL. I still don’t understand how my son could have fallen for that ploy.

Anyway, this is not shaping up to be a good day. (I’ll send you a FReepmail in a few minutes.)

*hugs* I’m sorry Darks. I know how all of that can affect your social life, not to mention your physical life. If it’s OK with you, I’ll put you on my prayer list.

It’s all I can do to help you, and I know the Lord answers my prayers. :o])

Furious! I just walked over again, and he sensed me and gaped and hissed a bit.

The stone spiral staircase is only 18 inches wide. It has to cater for both directions of traffic. Luckily there are window ledges to stand in.

Reminds me of some of the Outer Banks lighthouses we've gone up.

LOL! So at least we know he’s not a reluctant dragon...

I got an appointment at Urgent Care for Wednesday (the soonest for my doctor was around Thanksgiving) and they will do a blood draw to see if I have West Nile virus.

And now, I’m off to bed to read the very thick book!

See you all tomorrow!

"Not only is there not really any spin, but there’s no quantum tunneling.

But it keeps ‘em off the streets, so let ‘em have their fun. That’s what I say."

You forget that tunnel diodes are what make it possible to hear FM radio when you're driving through a tunnel.

The effects are subtle but helpful.

I've seen wells made that way. Apparently it was a village project to build a masonry well for everybody to use.

The stairs were on opposite sides of the well. You would go down one set of stairs, get your water, and then proceed back up the other side. Seems efficient.

No windows in the well, by the way.

Interesting. The efficiency over hauling a bucket up is obvious, but it took more work to build the thing. Forward-thinking!

I’m very sorry you’ve been poorly, hon, and now Winter is Coming! Take lots of vitamins, try to sleep when you’re not at work. Hug a cat. (Carefully)

You forget that tunnel diodes are what make it possible to hear FM radio when you're driving through a tunnel.

But not all tunnels.

Tunnel diodes only function as described in tunnels created with PPTP. Otherwise you must resort to a cat whisker..
