Most modern Americans do not understand this. And this ignorance wont change because most people dont read anymore, schools dont teach history anymore, and especially because this “hipocracy” narrative advances the commie left agenda.
But glad to see somebody here knows the truth and is teaching that to others.
It is like the movie depictions of slave owners savagely beating all their slaves. Yes, many did, but others did not. Many treated their slaves like a pet owner might today. Most people dont beat their pets and reward their pets for desired behavior and get attached to them.
My apologies to all and especially black Freepers if that sounds like I am degrading or dehumaniizing the slaves or excusing the slave owners. Enslavement is the second greatest evil that can be done, behind only genocide. Slavery is evil and it was a Faustian bargain to coddle the slave owners, but without that there would have been no America.
I simply mean that not all slaves were so abused as portrayed by modern movies and the NSM. Many older movies show a bonding between some owners and slaves, and that generation had grandfathers who were slave owners. They would know.
Actually in many states/localities, there were criminal penalties for beating or killing slaves.
So, along with the silly Simon LeGree caricature (as well as that stupid ass in “Django Unchained”) as 100% reality, these portrayals are really misleading, both about the people and the laws.
You mentioned pets, but in fact they were more like working animals, so indeed it would be plain stupid to abuse and kill them. Only really sick and stupid people would be beating their slaves to death at all chances. Ever hear of a plantation with 100% kill rate?
I disagree. Most slave owners would have treated their slaves a prudent farmer would take care of his horses or mules. He would make sure they were fed, clothed, sheltered and if injured their injuries were treated. If they are ill fed, weak or sick, they cannot work for you as they should.
People treat pets as if their children. This is not how slave owners, even the most benevolent would treat slaves.
Being a slave for Thomas Jefferson was probably as good as it could get for a slave. He fired overseers for being “too free with the whip”. Some slaves that ran away were not punished if Jefferson thought they had a good reason to flee. If they tried a second time, thought, they were sold South.
