Many moons ago, a search for the word "FAILURE" brought up what ? GEORGE W.Bush !!
Google uses an adaptive search prioritization algorithm which can be, and many times has been, manipulated by users to produce particular results.
I wonder if there was a petition floated to stop using Google, if the advertisers were targeted would there be an impact?

No. In part because it would barely make sense, and in part because the impact would be miniscule.
