old article but shows even the Y has fallen short.
It is somewhat reassuring that the restaurants I’ve visited in the college town of Corvallis, OR have sidestepped this issue thus far by labeling the restrooms all the same (male, female, trans) but pulling some plumbing so there is only one toilet and the door locks. You may ask why I’ve been able to make such a survey??? My many medications include Lasix, a strong diuretic.
This are the two crazy liberal counties that I have lived in all my life. But when asked my wife, my kids, my parents, my brothers and sisters and my nieces and nephews, and my cousins have all said that none have ever noticed a person identifying as “transgender” using or making a scene even in a public restroom not to even mention taking showers at the Y. My family belonged to the YMCA for many years.
You didn't know that the Village Peoples' "YMCA" was based on reality? That song was 40 years ago...

Heard something about that. Makes me wonder what they were also doing “In The Navy”.
Eventually, I expect the YMCA to change it’s name, and take the word ‘Christian out of the accronym. I told a young mother what the “C” stands for, and she was stunned, perhaps even a little disturbed. “I had no idea that was what it meant! I almost wish you hadn’t told me.” she said, wide eyed and tense.
This is one of those nice people who has been brought up to fear or be repelled by any signs of Christian worship. She doesn’t mind the Buddha with incense and fresh fruit sitting in the local Chinese Restaurant, but anything Christian or Catholic, makes her nervous.
I think a lot of young people did not attend church growing up like in the old days.
The ones that did have rejected it.
The claims the Y isa Christian organization. Nothing could be further from the truth.
It sounds like an “Open shower curtain” policy, to me.
The YMCA ceased to be a Christian organization decades ago. In places like China more than a century ago.
In China the locals even joked about it being the Young Men’s Communist Association because the party infiltrated it and turned into merely a Communist recruiting organization in the 1920’s
“Makes me wonder what they were also doing In The Navy. “
Probably something to do with “rum, sodomy, and the lash.”
In Eugene they just removed the men’s room. There are none left there anyhow. U of O ‘66.
They’ve already started to deemphasize “YMCA” in favor of the phrase “The Y”. Even their logo outside many of their newer facilities is essentially a big letter ‘Y’.
It reminds me when Kentucky Fried Chicken started using “KFC” to seem more trendy.
When I was a kid my naive mother used to hound me to join the YMCA and
use the swimming pool.
Since I knew it was nude swimming I absolutely refused.
Just seemed wrong .
Just plain stupid!
Fifty years ago? Yikes!
The Y organizations lost all connection to Christianity long ago. The word Christian in the name is an irony.
The YMCA stopped being Christian several decades ago.
