When I was a young teenager I would go with my YMCA dive club diving at various of the Channel Islands off of Ventura County Ca. Because of the kelp the dive boats would drop anchor in deep water well outside the kelp and we would have to do our ocean entry in blue water and swim for a good 5 minutes to get into the kelp forests . These waters are also well known for being the habitat of Whitey , many seals and sea lions being present . I can never forget how spooky that five minutes swim was . In and back out . Every time . Always looking around for that big dark shadow down below . Which if it was a whitey , the last thing you may see would have been it’s huge head , mouth open , launching straight up at you .
That exact thing presented itself to one guy diving off the west shore of Catalina . The only thing that saved him was he put a long pear shaft straight down the throat of the whitey as it was launching on him .

Simply install signs declaring “SHARK FREE ZONES”. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because of glow bull warming.

LOL!! You win!

I agree, they should put up signs declaring it's a safe zone...dangit!

They lost an Aussie Prime Minister that way some time back...nothing left of him but a few shards of his clothing or gear, so presumed dead.

“it is amazing to me how Australians, or people anywhere that there is confirmed aggressive shark activity going on, continue to go into the ocean as if no danger is present.”

Agreed.

Even more fundamental, is the fact that when you enter the ocean, you become part of the food chain.

If they put up a sign saying Shark Free Zone this would not happen.

Watch for this happening in Southern California. We had a shark attack last week off of Corona del Mar, Newport Beach. Great Whites are being encouraged to repopulate the SoCal coast after more than a half century of absence.

The loonies in the marine biology business think that this is just grand, and now that the sharks are getting up to the 9ft stage they are going to love it too. Lots of food, and it comes wrapped in wetsuits.

They’re going to have to rename the Balboa peninsula to Amity and play the Jaws theme down at the Wedge. Great fun, can’t wait to see the show go on.

Apparently a lot of SoCal surfers and bodyboarders think that they are the bros and buds of these fellow lovers of the sea, and will only be dissuaded when the sharks dine on a few of them.

Surf’s up, ring the dinner bell.

I guess those shark camouflage wetsuits and boards will start to come in handy, if they work. There are at least two different types. One strategy is more along the lines of classic camo, various shades of blue designed to break up the visual of the board and the surfer so that they blend into the ocean. The other is more of a masquerade, as a species that is poisonous or attacks sharks, such as a killer whale, with black and white graphics.

There could be a booming business in painting camo on boards and wetsuits as soon as a few tasty surfers become snack food. They won’t admit defeat easily.
