The American Family Association's pledge to boycott Target because of its policy to allow men into women's bathrooms, and vice versa, has reached 1.3 million signers, and Target's stock (TGT) continues to suffer compared to that of its natural competitors.
At the close of trading on Tuesday, the boycott-induced direct decline in Target's market cap was $9.2 billion. By the end of this week, that exceeded $10 billion.
Since April 19, the date the policy came into effect, Target's market cap has declined 19.4%. By comparison, the corresponding market cap of natural competitors such as Costco (COST), Walmart (WMT), Dollar General (DG), and Dollar Tree (DLTR) has displayed an entirely different behavior over this time frame.

The C-Level types, along with their Board of Directors and high level Exec's *never* take the hit when bad decisions are made and the consequences are felt. They always have their exit clauses in their contracts which give them big buyouts if their contract is terminated early.
Those getting hurt by the Target boycott are the front line employees and Target's suppliers.
While I personally don't frequent Target at all, it appears to me that the wrong folks may be getting hurt in all this.
Sure, the message has to be sent that we will no longer celebrate diperversity and reward boneheaded policies that permit perverts to share the same bathrooms as our wives, mothers and daughters in violation of THEIR privacy and dignity but we need to make sure we hit the right target (no pun intended.)
I want to know why the Left's own tactics aren't being used against Target and their CEO with a 24x7 very raucous demonstration outside his home?
Now THAT would be hitting the target!
A “unisex” bathroom is not the subject, they’ve been around for years. The difference is, men, and women, and whatever, don’t GO IN THERE AT THE SAME TIME.
Well deserved financial loss for a bad decision. It needs to continue a downward trend.
It looks like some cherry-picking of the data is happening here. If you compare what are arguably the two most similar competitors, Macys (M) and Penny (JCP), the decline in TGT seems right in line with them. Unfortunately, I don’t see anything in the Target price drop that can be pinned on their absurd PC-pandering restroom policy.
Wal mart is staying out of this, I believe not to offend either side.
If they come out against it, they will have the gays attacking.
If they come out for it, they will have this.
I think they’ve learned to keep their big mouth shut.
Target has handled this poorly, but I doubt whether the “boycott” is actually having much effect on Target’s stock prices. Sears and Kmart are doing worse and they haven’t chimed in on this issue. The problem with making this claim is that when things turn around in the retail sector it will make it look like conservative groups are as ineffective as unions “boycotting” Wal-Mart.
“I want to know why the Left’s own tactics aren’t being used against Target and their CEO with a 24x7 very raucous demonstration outside his home?”
The defense company I worked for was picketed every day for months. A bus would pull up a block away and dispense “protesters” wearing identical t-shirts and carrying professionally printed signs and a box lunch. At the end of the protest day the protesters would line up a block away waiting for the bus.
The left’s protesters are paid. They are what Nancy Pelosi called the tea partiers; AstroTurf. Real conservatives have jobs and simply don’t have the time to protest.
Some Wal-Marts have mens, womens, and family restrooms for the confused.
I usually drop into the Dollar Store every day for odds and ends and snacks. They have separate rest rooms, and you have to ask for the key. Boycotts work if enough people participate.
Any company pandering to this leftist convoluted deviant garbage needs to be put out of business.
When Target first gained popularity, their thing was high quality and stylish merchandise at prices competitive with the other discount chains. They appealed to sensible consumers who wanted to stretch their money without sacrificing quality.
Gosh, those would be the sort of folks who don't want their children or anyone else sharing bathrooms and dressing rooms with perverts.
WHAT WAS THE CEO THINKING??
Of course that's true, so why don't we rent our own mobs? Clearly there's a need for "rent a mobs" and do these rented thugs really care what they're protesting as long as they get paid?
(does this post need a sarcasm tag?)
What will really work for Target is to take the democrat party playbook and call everyone who isn’t shopping there a bigot and a racist.
“Of course that’s true, so why don’t we rent our own mobs? “
No you didn’t need a sarcasm tag, but you raised an interesting point. The left is highly organized and funded to promote its ideology. Conservative organizations, like the Annenberg Foundation, over time become coopted by liberals, so conservatism doesn’t last long. (Annenberg financed Barak Obama and Bill Ayers’ failed Chicago school project.) So the reason we don’t hire mobs, other than ethics, is that I don’t think there are any Soros type organizations to do the hiring.
Like all socialists, they will blame the failure on someone else.
Crowd Funding. Enough Conservative activists kick in a hundred bucks here and there and we can take out our own ad on Craigs List to disrupt a Shrillary/Bernie event somewhere.
To some degree, that's how the left does it. Have you ever seen an ad on Craigslist or Back Page looking for paid protesters? I have. Frequently.
We don't need a Soros. We need a Conservative Crowd Funding site to collect funds to pay protesters.
(See what you started? If you hadn't pushed back saying we don't have a Soros I wouldn't have started thinking this through ... this is all your fault!
They were following the successful model that JC Penney used.
Family restrooms allow a father to help a girl child, and a mother help a boy child. Makes perfect sense to me.
You don’t have to boycott .. all you have to do is stop shopping there.
If you think Target sells stuff you can’t get anywhere else; you need to start searching on the internet.
Of course, you can order from them online .. but I think that defeat’s the purpose.
I stopped shopping at Target the year they decided the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle was an affront to their customers. So, Target insults Christians and now THE FAMILY.
