AUGUSTA, Maine Documents show an Appalachian Trail hiker whose remains were found last year in Maine survived at least 26 days after getting lost.
During that time, her texts went undelivered because of poor cell reception.
The Boston Globe reports Geraldine Largay kept a journal in which she acknowledged that she expected to die and that it might be years before her remains were found.

In northern Maine, you can walk for a week w/out seeing any sign of civilization. And this hiler was not on a trail.
Sounds like she holed up the minute she realized she was lost.

Daniel Boone quotes I've never been lost, but I was mighty turned around for three days once. ― Daniel Boone I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks. ― Daniel Boone I wouldn't give a tinker's damn for a man who isn't sometimes afraid. Fear's the spice that makes it interesting to go ahead. ― Daniel Boone I have never been lost but I was bewildered once for three days. ― Daniel Boone May she Rest in Peace. http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/213380.Daniel_Boone

I believe the point of the article was the release of the 1,500 pages of documentation MWS had on the case.
As far as I know, the *US Navy survival training camp where soldiers are put through psyops seniarios* is used only in the winter. The gate is not manned other times of the year, when I have been there, [but I assume there are cameras].

Two-thirds of the hiking gear I carry are survival and first aid stuff. It looks like a pretty large backpack she has on and she was on a trail? No green maps? No compass? No signaling device of any sort?
Time and time again here on the Olympic mountain trails Eastsiders (those that live on the Seattle side) are constantly getting lost and we have to go find them. They thought it a day hike out in nature.

it has been found that walking in a general direction means you end up walking in a big circle. Best thing to do is go downhill, follow a stream.

Some good maps and map reading skills might have prevented that. Something I learned in Scouts. And that I taught Mrs. Fella and that she taught our kids and they are teaching their kids.

Exactly! People who wouldn’t lift a finger to look for me, would show up to put out a forest fire.

Glad you were safe. I don't know whether I'd rather have a bear, cougar or moose, sticking their nose in my tent.

This guy got lost hiking the AT and ended up in Argentina, with hardly a wrinkle in his Brooks Bros. shirt. Go figure.

In the late 1970’s I participated in a research project in the Smokies where we would take a compass reading and stay on it from one side of the park to the other, deviating only when the terrain was too hard to stay on a straight path. There were days when I thought I'd never get out. Did this lady not even have a compass?
To: Daffynition
Well yeah. If she loved starvation and hypothermia.
