They called it an “election gimmick” and a “campaign gag”, but the new president-elect of Austria once presided over his party’s campaign that declared: “Anyone who loves Austria must be shit”.
Alexander Van der Bellen – who appears to have defeated the Freedom Party’s Norbert Hofer by around just 30,000 of nearly five million votes – has a track record of opposing the nation state as a concept, and his own as a reality.
In 2007, while he was leader of the Austrian Greens, the party published a picture of a dog with the Austrian flag in its mouth. The poster read: “Take your flag for your gag”, followed by the declaration that anyone who loves the country “must be sh*t”.
The flag “joke” was a play on a campaign urging dog owners to place their dog’s excrement in bags and trash cans. The Austrian greens replaced the bag with a flag of Austria in the image (right).
And while, of course, efforts were made to distance Van der Bellen from this 2007 Green Party initiative, the issue re-emerged on the run up to this weekend’s final round of presidential election voting. Far be it from a “gag” or one-off incident, critics say, this attitude against borders and nations runs deep through the Austrian Green Party which is now in charge of the presidency of the country.
Newspapers drew attention to another more recent incident, whereby a leading Green activist declared: “Austria [is a] lousy piece of shit!” when discussing the country’s recent border controls to deal with Europe’s migrant crisis. “These are facts, not subjective opinion,” Georg H. posted to his Facebook page.

Actually, I would be bet that if the truth were ever known, they didn’t vote for it. They were swindled out of it.
What happened is that they lost WW II and have been occupied by hostile parties that have been brainwashing the public for the last seventy years so idiots like this can win a presidency. Happened to the “winning” side as well minus Russia.
Was there cheating in this election? Just a couple days ago the conservative candidate was well ahead.
If they don’t want to be a nation, I guess it’s their business.
IF as in our country an election is a squeaker the Left usually is able to “find” enough votes to win. Looks as though that scenario is practiced in Austria as well. Who knows the Democrats in our country may have learned the trick from them.
I’d say Austria be better off not as a democracy, but Otto Von Habsburg loved the EU and this madness.

You may have a point there. It appears that while van der Bellen was born in Vienna, his parents were refugee arrivals ( father Dutch family from Russia arriving in Austria via Estonia). I am Insufficirntly Informed of Austrian law to know the child’s citizenship status. I therefore retract my comment about van der Bellen’s citizenship. Thanks
Perhaps van der Bellen’s hatred of Austria is reflective of an internal fear concerning is own citizenship status or Lack there of ? I can’t say, someone with more knowledge of him will hopefully inform us. Thanks

I’m not 100% sure that was the case. Hofer was ahead by almost 4% until they counted the “postal ballots”. Who knows what games they played with those. Hard to believe that mail-in ballots could be so lopsided as to make up that big a deficit.

Either the dead voted by mail (Chicago trick) or the premarked ballots were held in the back of some remote post office (much like the Minnesota trick of finding ballots in to trunk of a “strategically abandoned car” in some northwoods town.
It’s not who votes, it’s who counts the votes.
I can - I lived in Europe for 10 years - hired to work on the EU privatization schemes of the 1990s. You see in Europe in the so called "West" (NATO or EU) nationalism is seen as evil because they blame WW1 (and some WW2) to nationalism so the Western Europeans are taught anti-nationalism and to hate the idea of nation states or tribes or ethnicity, etc.
So who is in and who is out in this run-up to the run-off?

Austria has sucked governmentally speaking LONG before that.
They even voted for that Nazi, Kurt Waldheim.

Having governments intent on replacing the native population with Nigerians and Pakistanis goes far beyond the “sucky” governments of the past. Hitler may have a started an idiotic war that killed tens of millions but he didn’t actually try to replace Germans with Arabs and Africans.
