I'm not at all surprised -- I saw photos of it and it was way beyond corroded, it was clearly broken past recovery. I've brought circuit board electronics back to life after being in corrosive industrial environments, and there is just NOTHING in nature as bad as months of salt water.
I admit, boiling nitric acid under high pressure is worse. But not much.
