I am still in shock and don't know if I am doing this right. I need prayers for my almost 13 year old niece/Goddaughter. Lyssie went to the beach today and while swimming, she cut herself on something in the water. The cut was down to the bone in her leg. I am getting this information 2nd hand from my sister. It is her granddaughter and my Goddaughter. She was taken to the hospital where doctors tried to treat the wound. They somehow determined that (A) they could not completely clean it. (B) They saw a lump which could either be a tumor or bone cancer. They did not take her mother out of the room to say this. They told the mother right in front of my Goddaughter. They said she needed an orthopedic surgeon and they didn't have one. Or one on call. (Indian River Hospital (Vero Beach, FL) They closed up the wound with a "soft bandage" which is supposed to make it easier to go back in and get to. I don't understand why they could not completely irrigate it to clean it up. She can end up with an infection as she still had sand and stuff in there. How does a hospital not have an ortho dr on call. They told her mother to bring her back on Monday to see the orthopedist.
Sebastion is where my sister told her daughter to take her to. The mother would not listen to her.

and dont panic yet on the cancer things. Was told that once and it was pneumonia on lungs.
There has been a wide breach in the family that at this point does not appear to unbreachable(sp?) even temporarily. The mother has issues and she refuses to listen to anybody. It is sad because she is ruining her life and right now her daughter needs her to make good decisions for her and she is not. It appears she is more concerned with her own pride/issues.
Prayers. May this be solved, and soon, and the child healed. Amen.

If I was in your situation, have the child’s mother go back to the ER with you or other witness and demand that a referral to another ER with on-call Orto backup, and say you are willing to drive to that hospital.
Such a hospital can’t be more than a 2 hour drive away. Get on her medical chart a full description of the wound and the ‘cancer’, and the reasons why they could not get it cleaned up.
There may be valid reasons why they can’t get it cleaned up. But there is risk of infection so I would not wait to get to another ER.
That is the problem. My niece is in FL. The only one who can take her is her mother and at this point she is not even taking our calls. She has severe mental issues. After todays episode I strongly believe that. Right now I believe my niece is at home resting. I can’t even be sure of that. The mother has cut us all off.
It sounds to me from the scenario you out lined the ER staff thinks there is an osteosarcoma or something similar. Depending on how advanced will determine if she keeps her leg or life.
If you don't fully clean a deep wound, your presuming the limb must be removed.
Something in the story is wrong.

If the mother has severe mental illness, then it should have been diagnosed. With such a diagnosis it is difficult to understand how the mother could be left responsible for the child’s health or the child.
If there is no diagnosis, then you will have to weigh the accuracy of the 3rd hand information you received via your sister I think you said. The hospital will not talk to you or your sister unless there is a court order allowing one of you to speak on matters of health.
You and your sister, if you really fully believe without hesitation that the child’s health is endangered might contact a lawyer for a small fee to make an emergency call to the Head of the Hospital and say that family members are claiming the mother is incompetent and that a confirmation to the lawyer is needed that the child is Ok until Monday.
Many personal injury lawyers are available around the clock. An emergency call even tonight by a lawyer to the hospital will shake them up to get the real story out.
Even though you’re not responsible and have no legal authority to intervene, you are involved and your emotional health is at risk. Such emotion has the potential to cause stroke or ischemic conditions, etc. You need to know for your own health, for your own piece of mind.
If you are able to pay a lawyer say $50 to $100, ask him if he can somehow require the hospital not to mention to the mother about the phone call because of her condition.
Have a Drivers License or Passport ready for the lawyer and some other proof that you are related. Also it would be great if you had any proof of the mother’s condition or incompetence.
I will pray that the ‘flow of information’ in the chain of your family is an overreaction, that the hospital made the right decision to have the child come back on Monday. This is the best case.
If you find out that the child is indeed at risk, the call from the lawyer should shake up the hospital to get the mother back to the ER or get her a referral to another hospital. It the mother cannot drive, there are alternatives but I leave it to you to figure that out.
In the future, whatever the outcome of this incident, you should all consider a Christian family counselor to help improve the lines of communication and to help ‘structure’ the responsibilities of each family member.

I think William Tell’s explanation is the most likely medical scenario background for you.
She may have been given antibiotics both oral and topical to protect the wound for now. I know my cat had a very large gash that could not be bound and we literally just kept it clean and put ointment in this wound down to the muscles until his own body sewed it back together.
I will pray that she will be OK, get to a hospital very soon and get the help she needs. Hopefully her mother will acquiesce and listen to you all!
