This week I was trying to get a house ready for a client under a deadline. I hired a flooring company, which really cuts into the profit but there was no way I could do it alone. At five o’clock the employees went home and it was just the owner and me. I asked why he sent the helpers home and he said, “Overtime laws. If I have to pay overtime the job rapidly becomes a loss. As it is, I make less money than any of my workers because of all the insurance and mandatory stuff I have to do.” He said, sometimes we go weeks without work, then I’ll have three or four jobs due at the same time and I have to pay overtime. It’s crazy what the state makes me do. They have no idea how my business works.
