Was Ted Cruz's Speech Last Night Shakespearean?
05-05-2016 | Captain Peter Blood

Last night and then again this morning I was watching clips of Ted Cruz's speech where he announced he was leaving the Republican Campaign.

Upon reflection listening to this thing I was struck by how Cruz seemed to have lifted parts of Shakespeare's Henry the Fifth's St. Crispin's Day Speech and made it about him. It was kind of funny when I thought about it.

Cruz handled the situation with dignity and grace and it was necessary for him to put this aside and look to the future for himself, as well as for his party and the country. Nobody expected him to endorse Trump last night but the next few weeks after he's had time to lick his wounds and decompress a bit will reveal the true measure of the man and let us know whether he has a real political future.

My guess is he'll surprise us. He's still a young man and Trump himself observed he has a great future ahead of him.

I felt like I was listening to a traveling preacher with the big tent and wooden chairs. “I’ve seen the light ......🎼” being sung off pitch by a group of old ladies warbling.

“Make America great again” was taken from one of Ronald Reagan’s campaigns.

Cruz sounded like a circuit preacher at a revival meeting. I now understand what Trump meant by his comment that Cruz doesn’t know how to talk like a normal person.

His dad was a mailman. I hope he uses this opportunity to remind everyone. It’s really healing for the nation when he does that. It brings us together.

Well, he hasn’t stopped beating his daughters. He bragged about it again yesterday. It’s Biblical, you know.

The intensity of the last couple of weeks and the fact of the blowout loss in a state where he was leading just a week ago probably had a lot to do with that. Cruz is a smart guy. Give him a few days. He knows we have to beat Hillary.

I think all the references to Shakespeare and Reagan are nice but probably are made to make everyone feel better. Cruz should just be Cruz and not try to be Shakespeare or Reagan. His supporters should stop trying to make him like Reagan. Reagan was then, this is now. Reagan was what we needed then and the voters responded. The voters did not respond to Ted, however. Ted wasn't even close. He was absolutely annihilated the last 7 contests and we can say all we want that it was NY and the mid-Atlantic, but he lost the south overwhelmingly, too and the upcoming contests, some of which were supposed to be Cruz friendly (Nebraska), were not looking good. It just wasn't Cruz's time. It maybe four or eight years hence, but not now. Actually Cruz has some soul searching to do, some fences to mend and some bridges to rebuild. He may be absolutely A-1 on the principles, but you have to be at least somewhat personable...and that does not appear to be the case.

Do you also think Cruz’s father was involved in JFK’s assassination?

If Cruz explained the issues as expressed in that speech during his primary races including Indiana he might have won. Instead Cruz allowed the visual media saturation to define and dominate the campaign.

Had he run it like the Reagan campaign which I participated in .That campaign developed truth squads that sought local imput on regional and local problems and used print venues as backup to explain conservative solutions which were also worked into stump speeches. Giving it that local touch which worked in Iowa with the ethanol issue. But Cruz abandonded that tactic.Instead his campaign let local supporters languish and left to creating their own devices . .

The missing factor was not being as gracious toward Trump as Trump was to him.

'Gracious'...is that what you call DT towards TC...not the word I would have used...

This is completely ridiculous and once again a non-issue. Trump should have let it go. The picture in the stupid rag was from a New Orleans event where LHO was handing out pro-Catro flyers and supposedly Raphael Cruz was standing in the picture. The MSM (and Ted) seems to have taken the approach that Trump personally wrote the article, took the picture himself in 1963, and then placed Raphael in the sniper's nest in Dallas, helping LHO aim the rifle.

Trump was wrong, but Ted protesteth too much. Nice shot about venereal disease though! Good one, Ted!

Who knew that this campaign's topics included divorce papers, infidelity (multiple candidates), venereal disease, Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories, heavy traffic on city bridges, email servers, bleeding from various bodily orifices, coal miners, wife beating on stage, falling off stages, awkward hand-holding, and stuffing your face on camera while being interviewed.

Well Cruz has had that Elmer Gantry style since day one. So it was part that also last night.

My opinion on that one is that if Cruz’s father was on New Orleans in the summer or 1962 handing out free Cuba leaflets, then maybe it is possible that he casually met and knew Oswald, end of story.
