What has happened to the Free Republic that I can’t break away from? You know the one where you knew something big was happening in the world because you couldn’t open the site because of too much traffic (late 90’s)? The one that where you read articles that were of great interest on science, religion, or the bizarro? The one where you would have to don a flame retardant suit if you posted something that was outside the thought prevailing thought process of the other posters? I long for those days as I am sure many of us do as well as those that left. I don’t particularly care for the bulk of the political posting but, like watching television, have decided not to open them up rather than throw in the towel and leave the site. Yet I’m still here waiting for those days to return, checking in every 15 minutes for earth shaking news. These days will pass albeit slower than I like and so too will this election cycle. Interesting times are ahead…

I thought this was more like a civil war. We were at each other’s throats for months, and I too am noticing that it’s finally dying down.

Don't be so sure, the next election cycle and all its cynicism will begin in full force on November 9.........The MSM will be pitching their support for their new favorite on that day.

Only because the Cruz cult flamed out. It was thee that started with relentless Trump bashing articles on a daily basis from every obscure source they could find.

Lol. If it helps any, I was trolling over at DU today and they are every bit as divided and enmeshed in flame wars over the Bernie vs. Cankles race as we were here over Trump/Cruz.
The opus as we once knew it is as dead as Free Republic. Many were masterpieces, others just funny. But almost all were keenly anticipating and were savored while they lasted. Some of the accompanying threads were classic. But, no more.
I wonder why people bother these days, the members of the forum do not appreciate them and since it isn’t a print media, the threads are not even good for bird cage liners. Like many great attributes of this site, they are gone with the wind and they are unlikely to return.
When I go, I will disappear without a word like the many conservatives that have gone before me. Doing anything more wouldn’t be worth the effort.
It happens every four years or so.
Like all civil wars, it ends when one side wins.

I have discovered that Liberals do not have a corner on the mob "group-think" mentality, and the side of the political spectrum that I had always believed to be the more rational and objective has shown me the error of my assumption.
There are some very reasonable and objective people who discuss things on this website, but their voices are often drowned out by the loud, knee jerk reactionaries and by various agenda driven folk.
Rumor mongering and vile gossip have become all too common, and so many people just swallow up the latest bilge, seemingly without any sort of skepticism.
Forget looking for an honest man. It would be enough just to find reasonable ones, and then yet there too I often must go a begging.
My experiences lately have left me looking for other things to do. Trading ideas and discussing things just does not seem so quite satisfying as it once was.
I’ve gone to a virtual Galt’s Gulch on most of the GOPee primary firefight.
