An author is receiving backlash after voicing that childless women also deserve a maternity leave. The concept is deemed a "meternity" leave, and Meghann Foye makes her statement in an article in the New York Post.
Foye, 38, thought up the idea when she was a magazine editor and became "envious" of her co-workers who would leave to care for their children after their eight hour days. She said that she felt as if all of the childless workers had to then pick up the slack and work for ten or more hours a day.

Nobody does that because thy really want to. They do it because everyone has taken it for granted they should. They are pressured even if not mandated.
LOL!!!
I agree that it is a shame it is so hard for mothers to stay at home (before anyone flames me, it is very hard in high-cost state like NJ), but my described having the best of both worlds when she worked part-time as the children got older. She wanted the interaction with adults while raising them as well.
“Maybe the rationale is that someday one of those children will be changing our diapers when were old...”
More likely, grinding us up for fertilizer.
Understandable; as a guy I don’t deal with the showers. These white women don’t either, in my workplace those are more or less racially segregated (and the mothers are different races).
That might be true ut the big difference is that across all businesses the amount of vaca and sick days varies greatly, not everyone gets the same amount, it accrues at varying rates and may have different factors. In other words wide lattitude in number, how you use it, how you earn it, how you are allowed to use it.
Far different from mandated fedgov maternity.
“However, I do expect a REALLY good retirement party/gift to make up for all the wedding and baby showers over the years!!”
Please report back to us then with how that turned out :(
I had paternity leave when my son was born in 2005. It was anything but a vacation. ANYTHING but lol.
That is what my husband just said. If we stop having children, where would we be?
The happiest sound, or one of them, surely must be the sound of an elementary school playground at recess.
At my job the childless women don’t work a minute more than the mothers, and have figured out their own ways to get off when they want to - by simply saying they have to do something for an aging parent, for example. There are only so many hours in a day, and you can’t “have it all”. My wife described a female co-worker who had a live video feed to her child’s daycare on her work computer; besides being the saddest thing ever, it was disgusting that an employer has to deal with someone watching that at “work” - I would never pay someone to do that.
A friend described a scenario where a childless woman went to their boss and basically said that going forward they would pretend she had a family, and she couldn’t stay late any longer because she had to make dinner for her imaginary family. She had a valid point; that wasn’t a fair arrangement, and I support her in that.
The resentful childless women I describe don’t work any extra time because they are relics of a bygone era where people worked 9-5 like clockwork; they are older, and don’t have the interest or stamina for more work. They came of age at a time when women were just starting to enter the full-time workforce en masse, and the idea of being worked to death the way so many others are today is unthinkable to them; they simply refuse to put in extra time/effort, so have no basis for complaint about the mothers in the office. Fearing lawsuits, the company promotes them despite their lack of effort, so us guys in the office cut back our hours to match theirs - and this let me be actively involved in my children’s lives instead of just seeing them late at night or on weekends.
While I deal with many young women working long hours (in relationships with vendors), I don’t see it in my own company; my female co-workers reject the idea of long hours and use threats of lawsuits to prevent it from hurting them financially. As a guy, I make sure their actions benefit me in terms of work/life balance; if what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, I’ve been working like a goose for years now - with no financial consequences. The legal atmosphere (in which tokenism is rampant to preempt lawsuits) have made extra time/effort on a white guy’s part an exercise in futility.
Definitely a valid concern; as another FReeper pointed out, the survivors of abortion are now fighting in courts for the right to euthanize their parents. The intergenerational warfare will only get worse as young people condemned to McJobs watch older people (even in their forties and fifties) earn salaries and buy goodies far beyond their reach.
The politics of envy are ugly...
In that case, men certainly deserve menternity leave.

I’m 70 years old and expecting to take an “eternity leave”, before too many more years (or days or minutes).
Oh, what a glorious vacation!
Hey! None of that talk! You’re a favorite around these parts! :)
Ridiculous. Any good gynecologist lets women know all about fertility even when female patients aren’t even thinking about it. And don’t think single women don’t go to gynecologists, they do. I live in NYC, land of putting-off having kids, and I haven’t seen all these purse dogs you speak of. Total cliché and pretty anti-woman, too.
Shouldn’t management be held accountable for not enforcing policies equally across the board? Some people, men and women both, calculate what they can get away with, and do no more than that.
That the managers are too weeny to do their job is a bad reflection on them. They are allowing the bad behavior you speak of.
I think management should be held accountable. But they are often afraid. My husband had two cases of pregnant (out of wedlock) employees who he wanted to fire because of absenteeism, laziness, etc. One he did eventually fire and, sure enough, some piece of legalize showed up on his desk ordering him down to City Hall in NYC to defend his actions. The lazy preggers didn’t even bother showing up for her hearing! A total work day wasted. I think the second lazy preggers quit on her own. I suggested he hire only men from now on! I don’t think he listened.
