The Times has learned that Reginald, the greyhound that was attacked in a recent incident has passed away.

A mixed breed pit bull jumped out of a vehicle from the parking lot of the Bodine’s Market on South Main Street, attacking both Reginald and his owner Lisa Matthaeus.

Reggie suffered deep gashes to both sides of his neck. The skin on both of his legs was taken completely off. Lisa was also injured trying to intervene, suffering broken fingers and a severed tendon.

“Reggie” was a retired Greyhound racer who was adopted by the Matthaeus family.

The attacking dog, Rocky, was seized and ordered to be put down.

Running machines. And, as with pits, they have advocates that take them after their careers are over. I know a guy that walks 3 of them . He’s constantly yelling at them. Flat out on a track is different than walking at heel. Hounds with tiny brains, is all.

That’s kind of you to say. I can’t visit a shelter or PetCo on a Saturday (adoption day) because I would bring them all home. My husband is the only thing standing between me and the title ‘crazy dog lady’.

These days I prefer my dogs to other humans :)

Years ago I bought into the “it’s how they’re raised” defense of pit bulls. Then a couple we knew got a pit bull pup and lovingly raised it. All was fine for the first year or so. Then one day the dog was on the couch with the wife and suddenly attacked. Her husband had to shoot the dog to stop the attack. These dogs are too unpredictable.

Yeah, i can’t go by the PetSmart cat adoption area, or I’ll come home with another cat, but my original PetSmart cat, Stormy, won’t allow anymore cats in the house.

I hate seeing them in those little cubbyhole enclosures.

I’d love to be able to get at least one more cat, because my Shepherd loves herding cats and rough housing with them, but she never hurts them.

I’m not going to lie, I like dogs better than people, always have.

Dogs are my favorite part of this world.

Pit bulls are like guns. Irresponsible owners are reprehensible, responsible owners are none of your business.

Don’t know about dog fighting, but cock fighting was prevalent in NM long before the illegal influx.

I hear what you’re saying about the PetSmart cat adoption area. It just breaks my heart.

If I ever win the lottery I will become a crazy cat man and adopt 50 of them. Currently wife says we are at capacity.

PS: anybody in the Houston area wants a kitten please tell me. Neighbor cat just excreted some. They are so cute I asked my wife if I could maybe “disappear” our preexisting cats to make room. She was appalled but I pointed out kittens are way cuter than cats.

And 15th century England is pretty much the homeland of pit-bull fighting.

A lot of people might say the same of my Shepherd. They are a known dangerous breed of dog. Insurance companies don’t want Shepherds in the house.

But ever since I have been a dog owner, I have always considered myself responsible for everything that they do.

I’m the one who has to make sure she is safe and everyone else is safe from her, even though I know she’s not dangerous.

I have already had to put one dog down for biting. Luckily I was the victim.

But I am not going to harbor an animal that I know to be vicious.

You may have that backwards. Shoot the owners. Cage the dogs. Put the blame where the fault lies.

Haha kittens are adorable.

Ahem, but I, ah, officially hate cats. the only reason I love cats is because Isis, my Shepherd loves cats.

Isis made me go adopt Stormy after my last cat died. Isis also wants me to adopt more cats so that she can have an official herd, but Stormy rules this house with iron paw and will accept no more intruder cats in her domain.

Stormy also weighs 20 lbs, so I have to listen to what she says, or else I get the fang.

What ever happened to the idea that it is not the weapon but the intent? Want to make pitbull harmless? Stop breeding them with over aggressive breeds like Chihuahuas, eliminating the race.

A gun can't go off on its own. A pitbull will. And, they were bred to fight from day one. Even some of the rescue groups will admit that.

They're wild animals that shouldnt be among civilization and should be put down. Every single one of them.

All pitbulls should be shot and their owners imprisoned.

This one, too?

I have a Great Pyrenees mix that loves nothing more in life than to lay near the cats and watch over them.

Not lick them or interact with them in any way - just watch over them protectively.

The cats hate him but he counters their hate with love.

If I ever get to pick, all my future dogs will be some kind of Lab/Pyrenees mix. Great with kids, great with cats, a little too tolerant of squirrels....

Other shepherds are incredibly fierce and can be quite scary.

My son rescued a shepherd mix 2+ years ago. Very sweet disposition, but she and I like to play roughly. Every now and then, she'll draw blood when she nips me on my hand or arm. When I react like I'm hurt, it's like saying a magic word, and she pulls back.

We were playing last weekend, and my 5 YO grandson joined in. She was playful with him, too, but not as rough as with me. He was able to handle it, his dad has a huge Labrador, probably 125+ lbs.

There is no doubt she would protect us if the need arose. I need to walk her more, though. She weighs 90+ lbs, though she should weigh 65. My sons "promised" me they would do all that...we know how that turned out.

There we can agree. I wouldn’t own a pit bull either but I think someone willing to properly control one shouldn’t have to answer to me or the government.

In this particular case I believe that an owner of a pit-bull knows or should know that the animal is dangerous and the attack is the result of criminal negligence.

Listen, whenever you have a dog, especially a large dog, around a small child, you have to be incredibly vigilant.

If the dog attacks, for whatever reason, the child has no defense at all, and a dog can kill a child in one bite.

A dog can kill a full grown man in one bite to the wrong area of the body, but with a child it’s much worse.

Make sure you know exactly how that dog is and what triggers it if anything.

Take no chances with a child. It might be wiser to keep them separated.
