Those HUMMVs got “airmailed”. When a slingload starts oscillating, an inexperienced pilot will fight it instead of flowing with it, until it gets worse & worse and he/she has no choice but to punch it off.

Out west a BLM agent wanted to relocate a troublesome grizzly bear so he tranked it & had it slung in cargo netting under a helicopter. The pilot picked it up & started flying to the new location but - you guessed it - the load started swinging wildly & he “airmailed” that bear from 1500 feet.

The BLM agent was immediately nicknamed “Splat”, as in “Hey, Splat!” “How’s it going, Splat?” He soon retired.

Not that unusual for a heavy drop. My battalion lost a few vehicles in a similar manner but never so many on a single operation. The riggers will have a lot to answer for. Don’t know if the guys laughing were part of the drop zone safety team or whetherthey were Air Force STS guys or just some troopers hanging out but they’ll probably regret posting the video.

Looks like the Malfunction Officer will get some work out of this.

The article incorrectly said that these were Army aircraft. The Army does not own or operate C-130s. It was Air Force aircraft dropping Army equipment. Given that this was Europe, and working with the 173d, I would guess the C-130s were from Ramstein, specifically the 37th Airlift Squadron, known as “The Blue Tailed Flies.”
