Many hundreds of Amazon Kindle Fire users are reporting their Kindle registration data and all account information stored on their Kiindle electronic readers have been wiped clean - the kindle has been returned back to zero-zero or original empty. No name, no account, no stored books, no stored videos or audio or music, not even a single piece of anything loaded on the device.
On the Amazon feedback site, there is no solution. No one has reported losing power or physical harm (dropped the kindle, dipped it in water or a tub, lost power completely, nor did anything but "turned it on this morning. And everything was gone."
Any one have any other symptoms?
Like with a cloth ?
Curious if those effected were Verizon, now Frontier victims.
Well, if Amazon has suffered a hack, rest assured they will compensate their users 100%, even to their own loss. I’ve dealt with Amazon a LOT, as I’m a frequent shopper. They have the best, most forgiving, most customer focused customer service I’ve ever seen. I even send them emails telling them so lol.
You don't NEED to be able to download books directly from Amazon, upon purchase. It takes all of ten, maybe fifteen seconds to simply download said purchases onto your computer, and then importing them onto your Kindle from there. The device (and its contents) is then wholly under your control, and not Amazon's.
Amazon most certainly has a clause protecting them from claims of lost data.
Hope they do mine. I’ve been trying to delete some crap for a while now.
I would dearly like to know how to do that, since I have been trying for years to download the Kindle books I have on Amazon to a local (linux OS) computer and the site will not allow it, stating that they can not identify a Kindle device to download to.
Finally gave it up as a Lost Cause. :(
As far as that feature is concerned, Amazon is as helpful as a Bangladesh Computer Repair and Chicken Currie Recipe website.
My thanks, but that was not what I was referring to. Close, though.
I do not have an Amazon Kindle. I have Tablets, Notebooks, Laptops, and PCs of various types that can read the various formats using the Calibre app.
The Amazon site will not allow any downloads of the e-books I have accessed, it simply refuses since it does not recognize a Kindle device to download to.
I also tried the ‘doze version of the Kindle Reader App, but unfortunately it does not run under Wine.
Your youtube vid shows how to transfer a file to a Kindle Reader, however I am already quite familiar with transferring files from one device to another.
Appreciate the thought, though.
Cheers!
Amazon admits it was a bad update and not a hack.
There's no need to repurchase the books. They can be redownloaded from the user's kindle account page.
When you get a brand new kindle, it has nothing on it. All your info about purchases, etc is stored at Amazon. You just log onto your account and everything is automatically downloaded to the device. Don’t see how anything can be lost. It is just not on the device anymore, but presumably you can reregister it and download everything.
I have downloaded plenty to PC’s from the Amazon site, but I do own a Kindle. I just download the Kindle app for PC’s, Androids, etc, when I buy a book there is a drop down box that specifies which device you send it to.
I don’t know why you are having a problem.
This happened to my wife’s Kindle this morning. Everything was wiped out. It took my 10 minutes to restore all settings and documents to the prior condition. Nothing was lost. I did have to re-download a few books though. No real harm done.
All 420 books? One click at a time?
Because of their error? And I am supposed to be happy?
You do not need to re-purchase anything.
You have ‘digital rights’ with Amazon for all your eBooks. If your Kindle gets wiped, just re-log in to your Kindle with the same Kindle/Amazon userID and password used to buy books and re-download your titles.
Recently Amazon asked users to download an update for their Kindles before March 20. Since many users turn 3G/wifi off to extend battery life Amazon also asked users to keep their Kindles on-line.
I think they are doing something on their system, and they had a small ‘accident’
Probably because I am running Linux, not a version of ‘doze or OS-10 besides not having a kindle device, and there is no ‘Kindle Reader App’ developed as of yet for Linux.
Amazon scans to find the kindle device, and when it fails to do so or even a kindle reader app it will not allow any downloads to occur.
Don’t have any WiFi either, so no luck there either.
I’m on dial up and have never registered my Paperwhite with amaz because I do not have access to wifi. When I download a book, I select the option “transfer via USB”. I think I had to set the settings someplace in my account the first time I did that. I DL to my computer and then transfer it to my paperwhite. This file, BTW, cannot be read on the computer.
Oh, and I always download from my kindle account page. When I try to download from the “Thank you” page, the DL doesn’t work.
So I contacted customer support (online chat). The rep said it was a “known issue” (whatever that means), and could be fixed by de-registering, the re-registering my Kindle. The rep said no data would be lost from my Kindle in the process.
He was right, and everything is OK now.
