Opened in October 1929, Kennedy Collegiate was named after the Honourable William Costello Kennedy, a Windsor (Ontario) politician who had served as Minister of Roads and Canals.

Kennedy is a fairly common Irish name, and many Irish immigrated to Canada in the past.
