Dwayne 'Pearl' Washington, who went from New York City playground wonder to Big East star for Jim Boeheim at Syracuse University, has died age 52. Washington died on Wednesday of cancer, the university said.

The Big East at that time was incredible. Truly the zenith of college basketball.
There’s an ESPN “30 for 30” documentary about the glory days of the Big East. If you haven’t seen it, I’d recommend it. Lots of memories from those days!

I’m going to violate one of my late mother’s dictums and say something unflattering about someone who is deceased. Pearl Washington had a reputation as a sucker puncher, which is a cowardly act in my view. He sucker punched Patrick Ewing in a Big East game and did the same to Armon Gilliam in an NBA game. Those are just the two incidents I know about. So, forgive me for not jumping on the Pearl Washington tribute bandwagon.
RIP.
