Whoa, colors!
I'm surprised that I hadn't seen this type of research or scan before now. It's hard to believe it hasn't been done. Perhaps I just missed it.
Interesting and colorful.

Check out this
LSD simulator on Youtube. It's a very short video that confuses your perception. Watch the vid then when instructed, look away into your room and experience the "high."

It probably looks better from the inside.

"However, when the volunteers took LSD, many additional brain areas -- not just the visual cortex -- contributed to visual processing." That certainly explains the phenomenon of smelling and tasting the colors, seeing sounds, etc.

"That certainly explains the phenomenon of smelling and tasting the colors, seeing sounds, etc." As a synesthete that is something that I experience with a good deal of regularity.
There are many of us that do this without the drug.

That was one of the more baffling things to try to explain to somebody.
That, and the patterns.
Amazing I lived through that, or more correctly, God kept me safe despite myself. Amazing Grace....

I thought the clickbait was minimal, and I wanted to do a minimal excerpt, since CNN is reputed to be touchy. You excerpted the good stuff!

I once read that the inventor of LSD took the drug and thought that he was literally insane. It scared him so much that he never took it again.

A huge and unexpected dose of LSD will do that to you.
Most people would say it’s a miracle that he remained safe wandering the streets (and bike riding) in that condition. But I have encountered people doing extraordinary things under its influence. Both physical and mental
Never tried myself but have experience with many who did. There’s definitely much more to it than “hallucinations”

I had the Hong Kong flu when I was 23 and thought I was insane. My fever went to 105, it seemed as if I had two brains, one seeing crazy hallucinations and the other watching all that from a distance.

When I was 18, I experimented with drugs, tried most (at that point heroin was restricted to the people who lived in dumpsters, and I recognized that as a poor career choice, so never tried). Of the ones I did try, LSD was fantastic. I did it two times, found an inner and outer connectedness, stayed Republican, and moved on, to the point I barely drink.
If you must use a drug, and can survive 12 hours speaking only in words starting with the letter ‘z” without sacrificing your carreer or family, it is a fun choice.

The first time, he wasn't even sure that it was the cause... he'd picked up a trace in the lab. The second time, he tried it intentionally, and there was no doubt. I don't know after that.
