A river near Yellowstone National Park suddenly changed colors and began to boil and emit yellowish noxious gases. Some witnesses wondered if "we're all about to die." Is this just another volcanic vent or a sign of bad things to come?
The Shoshone River runs through Cody, Wyoming, just east of Yellowstone National Park. It's close enough to be a 'canary in a coal mine' for unusual geothermic events and that's precisely what happened on March 25th when photographer Dewey Vanderhoff spotted the Shoshone River mysteriously boiling ... and more...
Yes, it's most likely a volcanic vent, but it's in the Shoshone River, which was once known as the Stinkingwater and not because of buffalos bathing in it. Explorer John Colter, who was a key member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, visited the area in the winter of 1807 and wrote about the many geysers and hot springs and an unusual sulfur-smelling river. Geyser cones, sinkholes and abandoned sulfur mines are evidence that others found them too.
However, that was two centuries ago and the geothermal activities have all but disappeared, says Wyoming Game and Fish Department biologist Jason Burkhardt.
We're kind of in a lull compared to when John Colter was in this area. There was substantially more geothermal activity that was occurring back then.
Until now. While this particular event ended after four days, Burkhardt says recent other activity has released enough hydrogen sulfide into the river that there's a 1.5 mile sulfur-smelling dead zone that is completely void of fish...

Stuff the fissures with Al Gore and the other AGW nuts. If it blows global warming won't be an issue for a thousand years. Climate change? You bet.
Dude, I saw this in the MOVIE!!
The lake got all hot and tilted up in the quakes.
Depending on the winds, NE CO would be foot deep in ash.
WooHoo!
“That’s it! Flaming globes of Sigmund! Flaming globes of Sigmund! That’s my note! That’s what I thought was so funny? That’s not funny.”
I’m not the least bit worried, but a volcano barely qualifies as Catastrophism most of the time, well, pretty much all of the time, but one may wind up on the list once in a while.
NYC is covered with brownstones, no one worries about that. ;’)
Good points!
“There was substantially more geothermal activity that was occurring back then.”
Perhaps. But we always stop by on the way through, probably 5 times in 20 years. The kids don’t mind the stink so much now, but when they were four!?
;’)
Thanks fella!
Colin Mochrie, Blind Date Hoedown:
I had a blind date. It really was quite fab.
It was my first one, for I’m Captain Ahab.
You have this date. There were many highs and lows.
She really hated it when I shouted, “Thar she blows!”
;’)
I don’t know about a movie - but it is in the geological record. And has happened periodically over the millions of years. I’m not sure what the consensus is, but I believe they figure it will all happen again. Someday.
The difference between a volcano and a supervolcano, is that a supervolcano makes a volcano look like a pimple.
The main difference between a volcano and supervolcano is, the latter is basically imaginary.
St. Helens was a VEI 5 eruption.
If you ever witness a VEI 8 eruption, I’m pretty sure you’ll notice the difference.
If anyone ever does, I’d be surprised.
