The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Saturday I woke up to an inch of wet snow; gone by noon. Light showers since, for a total of 1.1” of water in the gauge.
Carrots are starting to finally peek through.
Pea patch’s bare spots are filling in, as the deeper planted ones are finally breaking through. I don’t plant them; instead, I scatter the seeds rather thickly over the area, then run the tiller over them at minimal depth setting. Gives a wide row of about 30” width. This one is close to 25’ long.
First cutting of asparagus should be Wednesday or Thursday, provided the reports are right, and the spears don’t freeze.
She would probably NOT want to eat a cute lil’ rabbit. More likely she would get attached to it and we would have to keep them all as pets. LOL
We had rain a couple of nights ago. Not too bad on the thunder. I sometimes use the “white noise” machine set on thunderstorm to go to sleep. It used to work great. Now, not much works. LOL
We lost Daisy our Rat-terrier/Jack Russell mix a few months ago. She was my constant shadow-kind of needy-separation anxiety issues sort of.
She was having some sort of hip trouble. Would be on her stomach, and not able to get her back legs to get her up. I asked my daughter dog sit while we went out of town, and to groom her so that I could take her to the vet when we got back on Monday.
I also asked her to please keep her on the leash. She let her out in the AM and she never returned. They looked for her every where around, as did I when I returned. It breaks my heart to think that she probably lost her footing and struggled, but couldn’t make it home.
I really miss her, but don’t plan on getting another dog. Hubby doesn’t like them in the house, and we are not set up for one outside. It kept me tied down too, since she did not travel well, so we couldn’t hardly go anywhere for a few days.
We have a nice fenced “play yard” that I would let her out in to run around and do her business, and she liked to run after the tennis ball there as well as the squirrels.
I am cravenly some nice 70 degree weather. LOL I love the hyacinths. We have a few, and I would clip one off each week and bring it indoors for the smell.
Rain in Texas? You guys needed it right?
So sorry for you. All our gardens are open to the wandering neighborhood strays and pets that the owners let out to run into our yards to do their business. Sometimes, they destroy my plants too.
Thanks for the pictures. I am so glad that I don’t have to plant anything that large. I struggle to find time to plant my 100 sq. ft. main beds.
You are welcome. Please do me a favor and post as description of that just like this one each week here on the garden thread, when you have the time and are inclined to do so.
Thanks. GE
My frost bitten potatoes are beginning to come back too.
I started to get some action in the containers where the spinach, lettuce and carrots are.
We had a neighbor like that. My neighbor and collected the dog’s leavings and put it in plastic. The dog owner let the dog out “to run” around 6 a.m. and went back to bed. He was a late riser. One morning she and I took our “savings” and dumped them on his front porch close to the door. Yep, he didn’t watch where he stepped. That very same day he put up a dog run.
Well between recovering hubby and myself we got the outside garden stuff as ready as we could. I am headed in a few hours for surgery and a new knee. It’s my second one. first one was in 2008. We have the garden tilled and my big pots filled and ready to go. Love reading everyones posts and seeing the pictures. Happy gardening to all.
