'Scarier than we initially thought': CDC sounds warning on Zika virus

WASHINGTON — Public health officials used their strongest language to date in warning about a Zika outbreak in the United States, as the Obama administration lobbied Congress for $1.9 billion to combat the mosquito-borne virus.

"Most of what we've learned is not reassuring," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Everything we look at with this virus seems to be a bit scarier than we initially thought."

As summer approaches, officials are warning that mosquito eradication efforts, lab tests and vaccine research may not be able to catch up. There are 346 cases of Zika confirmed in the continental United States — all in people who had recently traveled to Zika-prone countries, according to the most recent CDC report. Of those, 32 were in pregnant women, and seven were sexually transmitted.

But in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and American Samoa, the virus is now

“as the Obama administration lobbied Congress for $1.9 billion to combat the mosquito-borne virus.”

All you need to know.

Gin up hysteria over a relatively harmless virus.

Get money.

If they hadn’t p*ssed away so much cash on horse sh*t, they wouldn’t NEED to lobby.

But apparently promoting Marxism doesn’t come cheap, and it’s clear that a president who’s importing terrorists as fast as he possibly can is not terribly concerned with public health or public safety.

Seems to me like someone - anyone - would recommend that no one who has been to a country where the virus was active be permitted to return to the U.S. Why do we keep letting people in the U.S. who carriers of all this krap? Seems to me like a lot of this could be stopped by bringing back the use of DDT.

Not only do we have the millions coming across the southern borders but we have all the Syrians coming in. Until all that is stopped we are going to have all kinds of previously eradicated illnesses erupt plus who knows what else. Good grief.

"Most of what we've learned is not reassuring," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Everything we look at with this virus seems to be a bit scarier than we initially thought."

This article also says that the CDC is finding more problems than originally thought !
It can be transmitted from one adult to another by sexual contact.
That this disease not only affects babies with micro-encephalitis, but also affects adults with neurological issues.
Perhaps , it could affect future generations with various neurological diseases
At this point , the CDC admits that there is not enough is known about Zika - but , do you want to take the risk ?

Zika infection is not even as bad as a cold.

tallyhoe :" Obama wants more money in budget. Zika to the rescue!!! never let a crisis go to waste!!!

Originally , the CDC said that only 12 States were at risk
However , additional information now suggests that 30 - 32 States are at risk, due to mosquito infestations
Do you want to risk your children , or your childrens' children, in successive generations, and put them at risk ?
Although much is not yet known, and further study is needed, future generations are at risk; are you willing to bet your future grandchilren and great-grandchildren ?
Are you one of the 30 - 32 States at risk ?

It may be harmless, and blamed for things that aren't the fault of the virus. I don't pretend to know.

It would be easy to say this was an upcoming transfer of funds from the backs of our grandchildren to the vaccine makers (with possible kickbacks somewhere). It isn't as if the Government hasn't pulled some odd stuff with various diseases. (Refusal to impose travel restrictions over Ebola, for instance).

While this reeks of a potential manufactured crisis, the virus will also impact the Brazillian economy, and the hosting of the Olympics.

While this may be hype, it could have the added effect of hitting a BRIC nation where it hurts, when it hurts.

At the same time, if Zika or another agent is causing widespread brain damage, it would be good to know, and to avoid.

It is equally possible the virus is being used to provide cover for other agents which have done significant damage, known or unknown, natural or artificial.

Modern science has one flaw, namely that once an answer is found which can be hammered into the problem, no other possibilities are considered until it becomes obvious that that was not THE answer.

This was said about looking for fundamental scientific laws, but applies to so much else:

"In general we look for a new law by the following process. First we guess it. Then we compute the consequences of the guess to see what would be implied if this law that we guessed is right. Then we compare the result of the computation to nature, with experiment or experience, compare it directly with observation, to see if it works. If it disagrees with experiment it is wrong. In that simple statement is the key to science. It does not make any difference how beautiful your guess is. It does not make any difference how smart you are, who made the guess, or what his name is; if it disagrees with experiment it is wrong. That is all there is to it."

Richard Feynman

Unfortunately, the time between finding out that a hypothesis does not fit the evidence and empirical results and the disclosure of that discovery can be great. By then the money will be spent, the vaccine or A vaccine developed and distributed, and the damage done whether it be from the virus or vaccine, or from a different and uncredited causative agent.

I have more questions than answers. Something is causing people to suffer brain damage, myelin sheath damage and degredation, and microcephallic babies. That is worth paying attention to, and if the virus isn't the agent, that will become evident as virus infected populations are tracked.

“Something is causing people to suffer brain damage, myelin sheath damage and degredation, and microcephallic babies.”

Two things.

First that there is an increase needs to be established.

Next, nothing may be causing it, or variable random factors can be causing it.

Thanks for the ping.

I was surprised how much the CDC requested, however I thought they downplayed the risks of the adult neurological aspects initially. I think this one got away from them and the sexual transmission aspect is something new from other outbreaks.

Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS), encephalitis, meningo-encephalitis, paraesthesia, facial paralysis and myelitis are just some of the neuro-inflammatory diagnosis from the original outbreak studied in French Polynesia.

Many countries just do not have the ventilators required to treat an epidemic. Further, many of the patients are left with permanent neurological disabilities after infection.

Here is an interesting report on the French Polynesia outbreak.

I think it is BS that the brain problems in babies is caused by Zika.

The Brazilian government has forced off label completely untested usage of the Tdap vaccine onto pregnant women. What did they expect would happen? Even the package label says it isn’t safe in pregnancy. Our government is pushing all the obstetricians in this country to push this vaccine on American pregnant women as well. It isn’t forced here, just recommended now. INTO AN UNBORN BABY WITH ZERO IMMUNE SYSTEM YET. Don’t let them do this to your child or grandchild, no vaccines during pregnancy, not even the flu one.

The real disaster here is that all this could be controlled and the risk eliminated by using inexpensive.............DDT. But bullshit science once again will cost many human lives, which is just fine with the gaia worshippers who consider most humans(other than themselves) to be an an infection afflicting the Earth.

I agree with you Yaelle, however I think the adult issues still need to be addressed.

First that there is an increase needs to be established.

Agreed.

Next, nothing may be causing it, or variable random factors can be causing it.

If there is an increase, there is a cause. It may be a group of factors too complex to be readily apparent, but that isn't "nothing", it's just complex and not inherently obvious.

Actually DDT may not be effective because of the limited range of this mosquito. It would have to be highly targeted otherwise it would be prohibitively expensive even with DDT. I believe the range is just 400 feet.

It is not that great of a traveler, however first world countries can afford other methods of control.

Yaelle, you may be correct. The lead sentence at that link: "The Zika virus has been known to infect people in Africa, South and Central America and Asia for more than 70 years without causing any birth defects." tends to indicate something else is the culprit.

I do not claim to know whether the effects noted are caused by the disease, other factors, or amplified by vaccination efforts.

Maybe we can figure that out here. As far as I am concerned, the science is far from 'settled'.
